Poll:Should non schizophrenics be welcome here?

This is prompted by recent comments by rogue who has consistently been vehemently opposed to non schizophrenics being allowed here. When I first came to these forums I had a schizoaffective diagnosis but currently have a paranoid personality one.Should this forum be (a) solely for officially diagnosed schizophrenics/schizoaffectives(relatives aside) ? (b) meant for people who share some common symptoms irrespective of diagnosis? © Where do you draw the line re diagnoses related to schizophrenia? Paranoid PD is very often described as a schizophrenia spectrum personality disorder alongside schizoid and schizotypal with some suggesting avoidant should also be included.

They should be allowed to see how we operate and what our experience is like. Might help to reduce stigma in a small way and give themselves a reason to watch for the warning signs of psychosis.

All people should be welcome here so long as the discussion doesn’t wander to far from what the board is for, and that is schizophrenia.

What’s your vote firemonkey?

How could that possibly be enforced?

People will only learn from exposure.

Wow controversial. My vote , yes. My experience of life it is hard , real hard and people with schiz should not retreat into a cocoon.

My vote is yes if people are interested in learning about sz that helps to reduce stigma . Also there are those who whilst not yet diagnosed may be showing signs and symptoms and could benefit from posting here.
If people are here for dubious/offensive reasons then I trust that the admin/moderating team will swiftly take appropriate action.

Absolutely. I don’t have sz, I have an unspecified psychotic disorder. How many unspecified psychotic disorder support group forums do you think are out there?

People here I’ve found can relate with my experiences more than any other group of people I’ve ever talked with. I feel like people just GET me here and the things I’ve been through and that’s an incredibly unique experience for me. This forum has helped me a lot, even though I don’t have sz specifically, and I believe others on here with similar disorders (schizoaffective, schizoid, etc) would agree with me.

With much difficulty. It would be very difficult to send proof that you had a schizophrenia diagnosis.

I feel welcome here but do get paranoid when people push the ‘only schizophrenics’ line.

I don’t mind anyone being here, it is an open Internet forum. At least a person admitting to be without a diagnosis is being honest.

In an ideal world there would be a place to talk exclusively with others who are diagnosed but this isn’t that place. The closest would be group therapy.

i do kinda think it would be odd for a non mentally ill person to want to come on this forum to chat and reply, that too me seems a little odd but to each there own. I understand the family members that want to learn.

How many non mentally ill/non carers/non relatives do we actually get here? IMO very few. So long as people come here for positive reasons then does it really matter if they are non mentally ill? If non mentally ill want to learn and be better informed then that’s a good thing. How would ever turning this place into a schizophrenia/carers/relatives only ghetto improve things for those with the illness?

Why get upset over something that will not and cannot happen?

Hi im new and heres my 2 cents.I was’ nt formally diagnosed by a pdoc as the state I lived in when I first started getting symptoms (AK.)had a law where people formally diagnosed have to be cared for meds, therapy and benefits like housing and transportation so giving a formal pdoc diagnosis for a debilitating mental state like sz is discouraged by the bureaucracy you pretty much had to have visuals to get a formal diagnosis yea know running down the street from monsters.Well I know I have sz from my state of mind plus a few aunts and uncles are locked away permanently because sz.should I be allowed here?. I Didn’t vote because I cant decide. I just came from a site that is so diluted by non sz people it’s a joke I mean people having a bad day will show up or a young dude that cant get layed will show up saying “I think im crazy”. I mean maybe its a good idea but how to verify?

Fair point but I just get paranoid when a certain person especially pushes the ‘non schizophrenics are the enemy’ line. Especially as the person has a history of directly or indirectly aiming comments at me .

Pro-schizophrenic doesn’t have to mean anti-nonschizophrenic. Also, remember that much of that was in reference to specific people.

The person in question has made a point of openly attacking me for being on these forums on more than a few occasions.

While I won’t put words in his mouth, the context seemed to me to be more about non-schizophrenic moderators. In any case, things won’t change, nor do many want such a change.

Yes,we shouldn’t limit ourself without good reason. Some parents, siblings or partner of a person with schizophrenia, some might also be interested to join the forum and post

The thing is I actually agreed with the need for moderators with the diagnosis as part of the moderating package. It was the tactics used to try and bring about more schizophrenic moderators where I parted company.
