Pimavanserin

Has anyone tried pimavanserin for negative symtoms or general symtoms. I think it’s approved for Parkinson’s currently but wondering if anyone was prescribed it off label?

It has a reputation for adverse effects and is only prescribed to people with Parkinson’s because there is no alternative drug they can turn to. That’s why the safety issues are tolerated for them. No competent doctor will prescribe it to SZs as we have many safer choices.

It is not sold at drug stores. It is sold through specialty pharmacies at a very high price probably over $3000 a month. It is unlikely one without Parkinson’s could get it.

Antipsychotics antagonize both dopamine and serotonin. While this drug only antagonizes serotonin. Id be curious if this drug would eliminate psychosis from a schizophrenic. If yes it would be a good alternative as that means your dopamine receptors arnt antagonized as well. Ppl sahearing voices has to do with dopamine receptors, so why do they have drugs which antagonize serotonin as well, all rather confusing

It will be a problem to get your country to approve it for schizophrenia because of the prize and I’ve also been told that there are some safety issues to your health that the authorities have chosen to ignore because that it’s the only meds for parkingson psychosis.

It doesn’t work for negative symptoms per se. It works as augmentation creating a greater antipsychotic effective. Idk if blocking 5HT2a is less sedating. Negative symptoms were documented before antipsychotics. So taking less antipsychotics isn’t really going to improve your negative symptoms.

@shutterbug
Do you know what the adverse effects are?

This might potentially be useful if wasn’t for the cost. Also I kind of have the feeling that at least some of the very expensive drugs are also like new drugs. In that they haven’t been trialled by a great deal of people before. So there is still a likelihood of complications. If money was seriously not a consideration then it could be an option. However the efficacy probably isn’t worth the quality of life that $60,000 a year could bring you.

I didnt have negatives or cognitive problems until i got put on antipsychotics. However ive had ppl say they had negatives b4 getting put on meds so there seems to be truth to that. However i got off meds b4 and the negatives went away and my cognitive abilities returned. So i know for me personally its the meda causing it. Thats why i dont like being on meds. Only good thing ill say about antipsychotics is they do get rid of psychosis.

Negative symptoms can also apply to non schizophrenic people. Anhedonia-bipolar depression melancholic depression, apathy. Yes for me it has nothing to do with antipsychotic this or that. I became anhedonic from substances couldn’t attend to fixing those anhedonic symptoms and used more substances to try to fix it and made it worse and thus psychosis for me. This was years ago and haven’t been able to work , which is why I’m so interested in these new meds coming out that may be helpful for even non schizophrenic people

Some days I still get negatives but I just want to tell you that they have improved much by age. I’m now a senior of 53 years. When I were much younger I could not express myself in plain English but that has improved a lot thanks to this wonderful forum.

You’re confusing negatives with side effects

@Johnnrocato56

It kind of sounds likenyou blew out your receptors from drug use? What kind of drugs are you using? Are you currently on antipsychotics?

Working on my sobriety right now yes I did blow out my receptors and yes have been on Latuda now switched to Saphris. Alothough these are the I guess better of the meds they kind of sneak up on you in terms of making you a couch tv watching potato. Exercise has been and is consistently the only thing to really help even if temporarily. I’m constantly researching KARxt, Ulotaront and the others as they may be used for addiction characteristics, melancholic and major depression and anhedonia apathy…

@Johnnrocato56

Yeah i used to read up on karxt and ulotaront a lot too, basically i cant find any new information so i just stopped searching about it. When they come out ill take it though. Wont know how good they are unless i take them, regardless of what info there is on internet. But i am hoping for best with them.
