last week I was considering getting a Monday through Friday job full time, and supplement my income with a weekend job like 15-20 hours on the weekends. but I decided I can’t handle that. so now im thinking I will try to find a fulltime job and then maybe work in a restaurant one day a week to help pay for my meds. as long as I get one day off a week I think i’ll be fine. of course if my fulltime job is 50 hours a week, which many are, I will probably just do that and not get an additional side job. I feel like I have to make up for lost time if im ever going to retire someday.
A job i might be starting requires that. Its not gruelling work though, so I am kind of ok with it.
My work is easy, fighting Bay Area traffic is grueling. Putting up with neighbors is more grueling than both put together.
I like my weekends as a time to recover and recuperate from all the work I do in the warehouse. The only time I would work weekends if there was overtime where I would get paid time and a half or even double pay. For an employer to work their employees beyond 40 hours a week is illegal unless the employees are compensated for that over worked time.
That’s a recipe for burnout. Your “day off” is going to be frantic cleaning and housework, most likely. We’re talking zero downtime.
yeah maybe 6 days is a little too ambitious. I was even thinking of working 7 days a week so I could make some bank sooner than later. I would probably burn out.
there are some weekend shifts available semi close, those would be 3 10-12 hour shifts, if I got one of those jobs I could work and go back to school, studying and completing assignments on my days off. but still maybe a little much.
at the moment im thinking I will just work and earn enough for tuition then go to school full time. once I’ve completed my degree, I will then go back to work. every time I try to do both at the same time, I fail miserably. so at least 3 years of work in my future, before school, maybe even 5 years of work.
I just wish I had more money, that is why im thinking of working more, I wont have the energy to pull those kind of hours when im older.
I second @shutterbug. I used to work six days a week and I ended up running out of my office building one day and never returning.
Before I went on disability I was working 72 hours a week. I was working 12 hours a day 6 days a week. All I did was work and sleep. The boss use to stand over us with a stop watch to see how many car doors we could weld. Each door had 35 welds and if I missed one I’d get written up. I was using a spot welding gun that weighed 200lbs. It was suspended from a cable which took some of the weight off but it was still heavy.
wow sounds demanding.
Another thing with the spot welding gun if I didn’t hold it at the right angle it would shoot molten metal that burned through my clothes or sometimes hit me in the face.
I am thinking about working part time maybe at a clothing store. I will be moving soon. I hope all is well.
