I’m just sharing. My memory issues scare me.
It’s gotten so bad that just a few weeks or a month after watching a movie, I sometimes forget that I even watched it. I’ve never heard of it. Or, I remember that I watched it, but I can’t tell you what it was about or who was in it. Sometimes I remember, but remembering is the odd time these days.
I think it was during my divorce that I declined significantly. That was 20+ years ago. I do remember that at that time, someone would say that I had said or done something, but I wouldn’t remember so I would deny it. I would get angry and feel accused. Sometimes later I would then remember that I had said or done what the person had said…it was humiliating.
Now, I’m used to not remembering things. I tell people that I have memory issues.
If I met you, I wouldn’t remember your name, maybe within minutes of hearing it. I won’t remember your birthday if you told me, or any important event or thing about you. That’s one of the reasons that friendships are hard for me.
I’ve never done drugs, I don’t drink alcohol, and I’ve never been on APs. Why is my mind like Swiss cheese?
I’m having some memory issues lately also @Hedgehog.
Dementia runs in my family on my Mothers side.
God, hope its not this.
The same has happened to me. I have completely forgotten who a person was almost IMMEDIATELY after meeting them, I’ve gone to a friend’s birthday party and forgot who’s birthday it was, once I came back in my room and left it again 3 TIMES before finally remembering what I went back for, etc.
My brain wasn’t always this way. It happened after my first major psychotic episode. I’ve just never really functioned the same since.
Yesterday I was watching tv with my husband and called the Empire State Building the Eiffel Tower. It took me two minutes to realize that I had called it the wrong name and then couldn’t remember what I had called it! I had to ask my husband what I had said and what the real name was…
My dad is in assisted living because of dementia. His came on suddenly after my mom’s passing and has worsened slowly.
I’ve been through enough with this life and this brain. I really don’t want to live with dementia…
I’m sorry, @Wave that you have some issues too. Do you think it’s just genetic?
I’m sorry, @Anna. Same for me with the going into a room, or to the store, etc… Do you think it’s the psychosis? I’ve never been on APs, so I know it’s not that. Maybe trauma?
I used to have a diagnosis of “mild cognitive impairment”. I would get lost on the way to the grocery store. I would end up in another city entirely. But, then, I started taking the nootropic, “Cognitex Basics”, and also started exercising every day for 75- 90 minutes a day. My exercises are yoga, piano playing and stair climbing. I also started eating a healthier diet. Now, I test normal on cognitive tests.
Well I have psychosis and ptsd so it honestly could be due to either or both. I know psychosis damages your brain and can create cognitive issues so it could be due to that.
I am quite young so I highly doubt I have dementia and attribute my memory issues to my mental illness. I hope yours is the same and not something as degenerative as dementia.
It can be really upsetting sometimes. I’ve cried over it. I’m 22 and feel ancient. People get mad at me too about it.
I was told by my psychiatrist that my cognitive issues were due to sz. But, I was able to reverse it with exercise, diet and nootropic drugs.
Do you exercise regularly and eat healthy, @Anna? Do you take anything for cognition?
I think I was pretty sharp when I was young, but I was delusional, so… I think I started my decline cognitively during my divorce. It was traumatic.
I’ve had too much trauma. Not as bad as someone in a war zone, but more than most middle class Americans.
I appreciate that, @Anonaccount. I need to exercise again. You inspire me, honestly!
No I don’t currently. I have periods in my life where I do and then I’ll have an episode and slip again.
I know there’s a lot of things you can do to help your cognitive state, I just need to get to work.
It might be the SZ or medication related for me.
At least I’m hoping it is.
I’m too young to be worrying about Dementia.
I feel like I have dementia too and I’m just 21
Memory naturally gets worse with age it doesn’t mean you have dementia
Sz can feel like dementia sometimes.
I’m sorry you’re dealing with that Hedgehog. I relate to everything you said. My cognitive problems started when I was 19 or so. I’m now 24 and I can’t remember a movie I watched after only 1 day. I forget entire conversations, arguments, and other verbal stuff with a day, too. It really upsets me, but it helps to have good family. I hope your family is patient and understanding with you. I just tell people that I have memory and hearing problems (it’s not a lie) … Just there I forgot how to spell “lie”, lol. I tried to Swype “lye” on my keyboard for the synonym of “dishonest”.
Anyway, keep your chin up. You’re still awesome and always will be. I think you’re really nice.
Thank you, @Blossom. I’m sorry you’re dealing with memory issues at such a young age. I wonder if you can talk with your doctor or a nutritionist to start some preventative measures to improve your memory and stop any further decline. ️
