No idea what happened to my autism assessment referral

I called my gp who gave me a number for the mental health team but they don’t deal with autism referrals. Part of me wants to go private but £5000 is a lot to get assessed.

Edit just saw some places who assess for under £1000 but is it worth it if it’s not done by nhs ?

What do you hope to achieve by getting an autism spectrum diagnosis?

Well , I’m hoping (at least hoping) it will be easier on the reasonable adjustments at work cos right now I keep having to quit cos they don’t help.

What adjustments would you be looking for?

Possibly an option to work from home for most of the time or at least a few days a week.

I don’t know how being diagnosed with autism would get you more help than your current diagnosis.

Have you talked to HR?

Because I’m zero hours there’s not much they are willing to do. They don’t even have occupational health for me. So I’m on the look out for something else now cos after I came off sick they no longer have part time anymore.

You’ve been at this a long time.

You work for a bit,

It gets overwhelming or there are issues,

You find another job.

You know I like you and I am not saying this to sound like a jerk,

But do you think this kind of work is right for you?

It seems to not be working out.

What kind of field would you like to work in?

Have you thought of going back to school or learning a trade?

I agree with you, maybe public facing roles aren’t right for my anxiety. I have so much experience in the nhs. But it just never works for me I need something where I’m not facing a lot of people. But I don’t know what else would interest me I’m just not a career orientated person I just work to earn.

Accountants don’t face a lot of clients and I thought you did study that for a while.

Maybe worth reconsidering.

I don’t know if this is contributing positively to this thread or not, but I used to work security guard jobs on the weekend. Some, but not all of them are very isolated, low stress and not very demanding. A lot of them you just sit there and watch something or walk around and keep an eye on stuff. Pretty low stress stuff with little public interaction. Mine wasn’t the greatest pay, and you wouldnt be applying your education or experience, but it could be easy money and a low stress job.

Like I said, I dont know if this contributing to this thread but I just know that it was easy stuff and worked out well for a weekend job for me. Would be reliable income anyway.

Just a thought.

With my 10 + years NHS experience, I could potentially look into a clinical coding apprenticeship too… I got time to think through this.

Security guard seems like a good shout but I’m not sure I’m brave enough when it comes to confrontation :slightly_frowning_face:

The unfortunate truth is there’s F all support out there for autistic adults.

My pdoc did a quick assessment in his office and a few times during our telehealth appts., and he diagnosed me with autism. I kinda want a second opinion, but it’s expensive and a long wait. So I just tell people who need to know that yes, I am autistic. Not a big deal to me, though.
