Niacin supplement

My husband picked up some 500 mg niacin. I took one today. I took it for energy production. But during some reading I found it was supposed to help sz and sza. Anypbe have experience with it? I wondered if it was actually helpful.

I took it and noticed nothing. I was prescribed it by a go that kind of spealizes in vitamins, so far that he offers Iv therapy to the tune of 3k a program

There was just a thread on here about a rare genetic variant with disordered niacin metabolism as a risk factor for sz. So maybe in a small, specific subset of people.

Niacin can be very dangerous if taken in too large a dosage.

I took 2,000mg of niacin a day for about a month. (Started at 1,000mg a day and worked my way up)

Didn’t notice any improvement so I stopped.

There’s an organised group of quacks that actively promote niacin as a cure for schizophrenia. Especially on youtube. It doesn’t help schizophrenia and 500mg taken regularly can cause problems.

From webmd :

When used daily for multiple years, niacin might increase the risk of developing diabetes.

Some concern has been raised about stroke risk in people taking niacin. In one large study, people who took high doses of niacin had a two-fold greater risk of stroke compared to those not taking niacin. However, it is unlikely that this outcome was due to niacin. Most experts believe that it is too soon to draw any conclusions about niacin and strokes.

Diabetes : Niacin might increase blood sugar. People with diabetes who take niacin should check their blood sugar carefully.

So, occasionally for energy would be fine, you think? I’ve been feeling more like doing things today.

And as for blood sugar I read some and told my husband to avoid it. I don’t worry about mine going up because I’ve been having episodes of hypoglycemia. I’m not diabetic, my blood work shows no diabetes but lately it has been very low. One day I had even worse shakes than usual and took a readong. It was just 57!

I don’t know.

Here’s the whole thing from webmd on niacin side effects :

Side Effects & Safety

Niacin is LIKELY SAFE for most people when taken by mouth. A common minor side effect of niacin is a flushing reaction. This might cause burning, tingling, itching, and redness of the face, arms, and chest, as well as headaches. Starting with small doses of niacin and taking 325 mg of aspirin before each dose of niacin will help reduce the flushing reaction. Usually, this reaction goes away as the body gets used to the medication. Alcohol can make the flushing reaction worse. Avoid large amounts of alcohol while taking niacin.

Other minor side effects of niacin are stomach upset, intestinal gas, dizziness, pain in the mouth, and other problems.

When doses of over 3 grams per day of niacin are taken, more serious side effects can happen. These include liver problems, gout, ulcers of the digestive tract, loss of vision, high blood sugar, irregular heartbeat, and other serious problems.

Special Precautions & Warnings:

Pregnancy and breast-feeding : Niacin is LIKELY SAFE for pregnant and breast-feeding women when taken in the recommended amounts. The recommended amount of niacin for pregnant or breast-feeding women is 30 mg per day for women under 18 years of age, and 35 mg for women over 18.

Allergies : Niacin might worsen allergies by causing histamine, the chemical responsible for allergic symptoms, to be released.

Heart disease/unstable angina : Large amounts of niacin can increase the risk of irregular heartbeat. Use with caution.

Crohn’s disease : People with Crohn’s disease might have low niacin levels and require supplementation during flare-ups.

Diabetes : Niacin might increase blood sugar. People with diabetes who take niacin should check their blood sugar carefully.

Gallbladder disease : Niacin might make gallbladder disease worse.

Gout : Large amounts of niacin might bring on gout.

Kidney disease : Niacin might accumulate in people with kidney disease. This might cause harm.

Liver disease : Niacin might increase liver damage. Don’t use large amounts if you have liver disease.

Stomach or intestinal ulcers : Niacin might make ulcers worse. Don’t use large amounts if you have ulcers.

Very low blood pressure : Niacin might lower blood pressure and worsen this condition.

Surgery : Niacin might interfere with blood sugar control during and after surgery. Stop taking niacin at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.

Fatty deposits around tendons (tendon xanthomas) : Niacin might increase the risk of infections in xanthomas.

Thyroid disorders : Thyroxine is a hormone produced by the thyroid gland. Niacin might lower blood levels of thyroxine. This might worsen symptoms of certain thyroid disorders.

i heard its good for the cardio-vascular system. My dad took it to expand his arteries so blood would flow better. So i could see with expanded blood vessels you would get more oxygen to brain and might have a favorable effect.

Its improved cognition, nothing for positives though.

I took 3 to 5 grams a day for a few years. I was convinced it would help with psychosis due to Dr hoffer teachings online.

At the end I couldn’t stomach even 250mg cuz I would vomit from stomach lining irritation.

I won’t ever take 500 mg again. Decided to try it once more for the energy. The flush this time was awful. I am red all over, stinging skin, and dizzy shaky. Never again.

If your flushing that means it’s good. The Niacin is doing its job. Trick is slowly titrate yourself to about 3 grams per day I think until you dont flush.

I used it for a month to quiet smoking but then gave up. For me, I like the itchiness and redness. Felt like you just came home from the beach.

I take non-flushing Niacin to make my already super quiet voices even quieter. The kind I take is called Inositol Hexanicotinate, it’s pretty liver-safe, but I keep my daily dose at or below 3 grams just to be sure.

I take 1 gram 3x a day, with my Amyloban 3399. In the morning, I take 0.5 mg Haldol, noon and night I take 3 mg Paliperidone.

@naturallycured where do you get your Amyloban 3399 from? Can you explain what you feel from it, in just simplified terms?

I get my Amyloban 3399 from Amazon. I feel nothing bad from it, and only am getting a reduction in schizophrenic voices from using it.

Is it euphoric? Pleasant, happy? Sad?
