One of my friends bought a plane. It’s a 1962 model. I went and helped him unload it from a UHaul.
He wants to know if I want to invest as a partner and help him put it back together. It’s not a light sport. I couldn’t fly it by myself technically. Well at least I am not supposed to. I will think about it.
If you dont mind me asking, is it because of your sz/sza that you cant get a medical? I only ask because one day I’d like to get my pilot license, and I didnt consider my psychosis as a road block.
It’s not too personal. It’s not a big deal. To get a medical a psychotic disorder is disqualifying. Any psychotic disorder.
I take 5 prescription medications and all 5 of them are also disqualifying. The only way I could get my medical back is to come off all the medications and have the diagnosis refuted. I spent the first five years I was sick trying to come off meds. It never worked out. Having to take them was like a death sentence. I am over it now though and know I need them.
But as long as you have never been denied a medical you can fly as a sport pilot in light sport airplanes with only a drivers license and no medical. This plane is too big to be a light sport. They have to weigh less than like 1400 pounds and have 125 hp or less.
But there is better news. In 2020 they are supposed to increase the weight limit and hp of light sport planes. I am anxiously awaiting this. There haven’t been any recent news releases or updates about it.
They also have a new program called basic med where if you have had a medical before you can get signed off to fly by any doctor. You just have to take an online class. If I could find a doctor that would sign me off with schizophrenia and my meds I would do this. The last one I saw wouldn’t do it. I only tried once. My last medical expired in 2008. It just expired it wasn’t revoked so I can still try to do this but that won’t help you if you have never had a medical before. I am going to ask my VA doctor if he will sign me off next week but I am really waiting for that rule change in light sports. That will be nice.
That’s kind of a long answer but those are the facts.
You can always fly any type of aircraft you want with an instructor. I want to go and fly a helicopter soon. It’s been a while.
Good luck.
This is in the US but other countries probably have similar rules.
It took me a long time to swallow it myself. I should be a Captain flying big jets by now. I wanted to fly for United Airlines. Commercial flying is honestly very boring but it pays really well.
It’s all autopilot. All you do is take off and land. The flight computers do everything else so I guess I am really not missing out on anything except a fat paycheck.
I started lessons some years ago when I was 17. But my eyes suck and then there is sza. Darn huh? But I would seriously love one of those powered parachute things. They look neat.
You can wear glasses to fly. If you can drive flying shouldn’t be a problem.
I just read that whole article above and they are talking about maybe being able to fly for hire with a light sport in the future. I hadn’t heard that part before. I am sure it wouldn’t be a very lucrative career but if I could go back to flying for a living I would do it even if it were just on weekends. Maybe pipeline patrol or something.
That would be nice. I hope that rule happens sooner rather than later. I hate waiting.
Driving can be a challenge. I have a lazy eye so I have double vision. Oh well. I’ve made peace with it a long time ago. But it must suck to be a licensed pilot for so many years and then have it taken away.
This article actually gives me some hope. It says it includes flying for hire. You can’t do that with Basic Med.
But with basic med you can fly in the clouds. I have an instrument rating for airplanes and helicopters. I had a special instrument rating in the Marine Corps. I could take off with the clouds at 0 feet and with 0 visibility. That’s probably not a good idea in case you need to land immediately but I could do it. I pushed the limits on more than one occasion.
Light sport pilots can only fly when the weather is good. But that beats not being able to fly at all. If I could fly pipeline patrol or crop dusters I would be happy.
I took the online quiz for basic med today. I am going to ask my shrink if he will sign me off on Wednesday. He probably won’t do it though. I already filled it all out and I just put mental health on it not schizophrenia. I am hoping he just signs it. All I really need is his state license number.
