I need some advice from those of u living in high tick area locations with dogs. Do u use tick preventative medicine in your dog, or collars? Does ur dog do well on them? Any side effects? What do u use? How often do u find ticks on your dog?
I might be moving to a high tick area from a place where i never had to worry about ticks and im really scared of these medicines and don’t know what to do. Any advice about it would be very appreciated
Serestro collars are the best. They are pricey, but I wasted about the same amount on cheaper alternatives that were useless before I buckled down and bought one.
Has your dog experienced any side effects or irritation? Some of the reviews scare me. I know that if someone has a bad experience they are more likely to review than someone who it just worked for but im worried
My dog takes nexguard. Its very similar to heartgard as far as how they take it and what it looks like. Its just a chewable little piece of something, lol, i dont know how to describe it! But its just like heartgard. Its for fleas and ticks and works well for our dog. We still check our dogs when we go walking in the woods, just to be sure no ticks managed to hang on.
There shouldn’t be any side effects. My dog used one for years. He was allergic to so many things, but not that. If your dog experiences side effects, you can return the collar.
I’ve been using Seresto on multiple dogs for 10 years and never had a problem. But, that doesn’t mean others have faired do well. It just works so well that it’s a hard one to pass up
yeah i want something that works. i dont want them getting lyme or rocky mountain spotted fever. i plan to check them for tics everytime they go out too. i ordered early so i can have time to try it before we move. i’ll be moving in about a month assuming they tolerate the collars.
Flea collars are not 100% effective. They lose strength very quickly I think. The bugs will also just relocate to the back of the tail and hindquarters. I personally feel It’s better to use vet approved treatment between the shoulder blades that is good up to 3 months. Also some animals have a reaction to the collars and the hair around the neck falls off and they get a skin reaction. You need vet recommended flea medicine though. The cheap flea med is notorious for causing seizures, so it’s important not to buy the low budget ones. You can invest in a flea comb and check for fleas periodically to make sure the med is working.
yeah i can’t use the liquid u put down a dogs back cause my dogs like to wrestle eachother and they get it in their mouths then get diarreha. I went with Seresto so I’m hoping it will be good. They have used regular flea collars before with no problems but never Seresto. I’m hoping it will all be ok.
I believe you are supposed to keep them separate from each other for an hour after treatment until it dries. And then it’s fine. If you put it between the shoulder blades on the back of the neck, they can’t reach it themselves and lick it off. With flea collars they can easily lick each others collars.
