My prolactin is 2042

Got my results back today and my prolactin is 2042. It’s supposed to be around 20 I believe. They are doing further tests to make sure it’s medication causing it to be so high but I will basically have an option of changing medication or adding aripiprazole to lower it.

I am hoping the aripiprazole will lower it cause I’m not certain I want to change. I am also worried about the side effects of aripiprazole? I went on it a few years ago and it made me very anxious.

I think adding even 2mg of abilify should lower it if it’s due to meds. 2mg won’t cause you any anxiety. But I’m not a doctor. So take my advice with a grain of salt !

I hope so cause I don’t fancy anxiety he’ll.
I will see my psychiatrist soon about it. Probably in the next couple of weeks.

Wow, @Qwerty- that’s pretty high! I hope you are able to get it lowered, whatever way you go.

Yes I can’t fasten any jackets up cause my breasts are massive and I’m leaking milk. Also had no period for ages.

Oh no! That is awful! In case it helps ('cause when I was breastfeeding, I had the leaking problem), they make disposable pads to put in your bra for leakage. The are just little round absorbent circles. They also make washable ones in case you don’t want to keep paying for disposables.

It’s not terribly bad enough to warrant pads. But if it gets worse I may try them

Holy sh it, ma’am that’s a big issue. Like, the average prolactin level for a woman giving birth is 209. Are they checking your pituitary gland? I don’t want to frighten you, but they need to because you probably have a tumor.

Vitamin e 300 mg might reduce prolactin by a huge percent. See https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1490755/

SUPER high @Qwerty! Definitely try the medicine. Keep an eye on the anxiety and call your doctor right away if you need to!

It’s your antipsychotic more than likely. Definitely explore all the options with your doc

Thanks. Yeah I’m on paliperidone. It’s doing the job. Just high and prolactin.

Was it 2042 mIU/L, or 2042 ng/ml or μg/L?

I’m not sure @anon9798425. They are checking something called macro prolactin now and running further tests on my blood.

Good luck!
I researched it a little and if it’s the first one, it’s around the upper limit of what is “normal” on atypical antipsychotics, but if it’s the second one, it is way above normal and might indicate a different cause like what @Sardonic said.

Wow!! That’s awful high! There’s a chance that it might be a pituitary problem. Did your doctor tell you that?

No he didn’t say that…he told me not to worry and that on Wednesday they are doing more tests and he will call me Monday next week to let me know. In the meantime my mental health nurse has emailed my psychiatrist the results and I’m waiting on an appointment with her to discuss the options.

That’s good he didn’t say that. Good for you.

So my prolactin was pretty high (not as high as yours, but I was leaking milk) and they put me on Abilify to try to slow it down but it didn’t work for me. I still lactate.

My nurse said it could take months before my prolactin comes down…how long have you been on it ?
