It looks like if it’s true it’s worth trying
Some people here have tried it with success.
I don’t like supplements and have found them generally ineffective / bad for your body.
But seeing if it works for you seems worth a try
Do you really think an antioxidant like NAC could be bad for your body?
I don’t know the specifics about NAC.
That’s just the reason I don’t take supplements.
My doctor doesn’t like them and I’ve had very few ever have any impact.
Enough to justify taking it.
Have you done research on NAC?
Is it safe to take in the doses you need everyday?
If I use NAC I’ll talk to my psychiatrist about it
I just googled it and saw that it is not recommended for everyday use.
Is it like a PRN?
Yeah, I’d talk to my doctor.
I dont believe it to be a prn
I have bad news. It seems to interact with Abilify to make it (Abilify) less effective.
I tried it and got suicidal ideation due to that.
So be careful.
BUMMER yeah thats not worth it
I find no science saying that nac interacts badly with abilify, so one person’s experience is purely anecdotal.
I will talk to my psychiatrist about it
I wouldn’t do it. I tried a bunch of them several years ago and many of them made me worse. One brought my tremors back and none had any positive effect.
None of that stuff is regulated or tested with any consistency. Effects can very widely with the same product from different manufacturers.
I am talking about supplements in general.
NAC is a drug, not a supplement, at least in the US. Any supplements with it.may be banned soon.
I’ve taken it for years at manufactures recommended dosage. No problems. Does help a bit with ocd I find.
It’s a amino acid, meaning this is a substance that is natural for the body like vitamins. If you stick to the recommended dosage there is little chance of adverse effects. Hey, if you ever were willing to try another antipsychotic, NAC is trivial in comparison.
My apologies. Didn’t know.
It helps my OCD at 1000 mg a day. The FDA was going to ban it, since a company once patented it. Then the FDA decided to allow it.
Where did you see that?
“On March 31, 2022, the FDA announced that NAC is excluded from the definition of a dietary supplement under the FD&C Act. According to the FDA, since NAC was not widely used as a dietary supplement before its use as a drug, it is basically unlawful.Dec 8, 2022”
According to my A.I. chatbot:
The FDA has not banned NAC supplements¹. However, it has recently asserted that it considers NAC a pharmaceutical ingredient and therefore it cannot be sold in dietary supplement products¹⁵. Amazon has removed NAC supplements from its website in compliance with the FDA’s warning²⁵. The FDA has not issued letters to companies selling NAC for other health purposes, and it has not taken any further action to ban all NAC supplements¹⁵.
It is important to note that NAC can be harmful to health when taken by people with certain medical conditions and tends to interact with some medications¹.

The FDA announced “enforcement discretion” regarding NAC https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2022/08/02/2022-16499/policy-regarding-n-acetyl-l-cysteine-guidance-for-industry-availability and is not enforcing a ban on NAC. This came after the FDA was sued by supplement manufacturers organizations. NAC is now sold again on Amazon. Most supplement companies never stopped its sale.
They’re ridiculous in their wording
"It’s illegal but we will close our eyes until we don’t " is what I get from that.
