Music hasn't changed much in the last 25 years

Compare that to when I was growing up in the 80s…

For 1985, 25 years previously was 1960 (obviously)

Music went through dramatic changes from 1960 to 1985.

I could pick several songs from the year 2000 and if you didn’t know them you wouldn’t know if they were new releases or from 25 years ago.

Interesting POV @everhopeful . One I tend to agree with. I wonder how much is to do with hitting on a style/sound of music that’s commercially lucrative, and not wanting to stray too far from that money making formula. When it comes to that the awful Simon Cowell has a lot to answer for. He ushered in those whose vocal ability was secondary to how they looked and moved.

I wouldn’t know. I quit listening to popular music around the year 2000.

What you’re saying is people have changed much in the last 25 years. Music has took on a click ish type behavior. And that different groups like different stuff. Using my friend is universal. The stages that we went through in the United States and Russia. In the 50s. Are now behaving that way in the smaller countries. It’s phenomenal when you have the barriers. Of access to instruments. And the changes that they create.

I think music has changed, but it’s not the only thing that has changed. One change is that I now listen to music on a streaming service, Apple Music, and it’s so easy to just let the algorithm lead the way to similar music.

Another thing that has changed is me. I like the music that I listened to when I was in my 20s. When I listen to Depeche Mode, Erasure and Pet Shop Boys, I, at least for a moment, am young again.

I do like new music if the lyrics move me. I like Adele, Ed Sheeran and Harry Styles, among others.

I am an oddity in that I mostly listen to new releases and only occasionally revisit older artists. There’s so much new music to experience so why not? I don’t understand people who hate everything that has happened since their twenties.

Well metal is one of my fave genres and i feel that the last 25 years have been the best of it. So many bands out there with unique sounds. I listen to mostly metalcore and emo kinda stuff from early 2000’s all through to the constant releases of new and interesting stuff today. I find at least one new single or album i love every week or two. I have like 15 gb of music saved on my phone with youtube music. And thats after culling most of it to free up space.
For an example of a song im currently obsessed with that recently came out, youtube a song called ‘sacrifice me’ by a band called ‘unprocessed’ if anyone has the time! Such a versatile song! :grinning:
But i fully understand not liking that genre i guess.

There is a whole lot of bad music since the turn of the millenium…but there has been a handful of artists I love that are newer…Maneskin, Bon Iver, The White Stripes, Zombierella, Toby Keith, Alison Krauss just to name some. most of this music is far and few as far as so much pop out there now, like Taylor Swift.

I can tell the difference.

There was a whole lot of bad music before the turn of the millenium as well. How the hell did the Bee Gees ever get taken seriously? Every time someone my age or older tells me what shite new music is I just have one word for them: Disco.

Anyone who ever danced to that is forever excused from commentary on music.

(Bonus comment: A lot of the people who hated on Milli Vanilli own a Boney M. album.)

I think there is a peak of music listening by the age of 25.
By that time (If you were good listener),you will have music taste.
One example:

First time I’ve heard “Happiness is a warm gun” was in 90’s by The Breeders …

Than I heard it from Beatles.

Still like Breeders version better.

When kids would listen that song fifty years from now by band of robots, they’re gonna like it better.

I like listening to old stuff and new stuff. I’m a big fan of lady gaga. May go and see her next year as she is on tour.

It’s changed a lot. Higher quality these days and better mix/masters. Very unique/niche sounds too. You wouldn’t have heard a Skrillex growl in the early 2000s. Maybe something similar from Pendulum but not as complex.

The’re more brilliant, I agree with that.

But that means not that a good 60th recording don’t show the room where it’s recorded.
If you have a good hifi.

I don’t like the overwhelming subbasses in new recordings.

But yeah, I like dynamic.
