Metformin reduces exercise benefits

I’m kinda too lazy to explain the science but I’ve read numerous articles that describe metformin hindering the benefits from exercising. My doc put me on metformin about three years ago and never warned me that it could reduce exercise benefits. No wonder I don’t like exercising.
Thinking about getting off of it even though it helps slow aging and reduce weight gain.

Zyprexa I also find reduces the good feelings you would get from exercise.

Yes! Was gonna mention that. Zyprexa has antagonizes multiple histamine receptors and antihistamines also reduce exercise benefits. Less blood flow to the muscles and less muscle growth.

My doctor took me off my metformin since my A1c returned to the normal range. That was a month ago. My muscles move so much better now. I hope my A1c stays in check. I never lost weight on metformin And have heard that it can increase lifespan supposedly in some articles.

My A1C has been normal as well. LDL cholesterol and triglycerides have been high though. I think I eat less on metformin.

It is going to be protective if you don’t do any exercise. I’m not sure what the size of the interference effect is but I would guess that it isn’t huge. The rationale for not using it because of the reduced exercise adaptations normally comes from the longevity health community since in this population it isn’t used to control weight or blood lipids it is used as a proported life extension aid. In a normal population with still uncertain evidence about the longevity benefits the discussion around reduced exercise adaptation becomes relevant.

Theoretical if you are taking it and not exercising then you are getting all of the proported longevity benefits without any of the exercise.

You’re doctor might not know this but you should discuss it with them as I’m sure they have a good rationale for putting you on it. If you are exercising 4 or more times a week and you blood lipids and weight are normal then I think it would be reasonable to come off the medication but that’s just my opinion. Before that point it is actually going to help you and if helps keep the weight off then that might encourage you to exercise more so then not.

Yeah, my ldl cholesterol and triglycerides are pretty high. And before I was on metformin my weight was 10lb? higher. I’m switching medications soon so I will only come off of it if my desire to exercise goes up. Thanks for the analysis, Gamma.
