So I tried taking melatonin to see if it might help me sleep through the night. I wasn’t happy with the result. It didn’t stop me from getting up at like 1 am after only sleeping about 4 hours. Also it gave me a toxic kind of headache.
But the really big thing I didn’t like about it is it seemed to worsen my depression. I sort of felt more melancholy. After I felt the decline in mood I googled it and sure enough it’s a known side effect of melatonin. Which makes sense because it’s bound to effect your serotonin which is linked to depression.
I wonder, though, why my pdoc didn’t warn me of this pretty important side effect. Especially since I’m fighting so hard right now not to fall into a major depressive episode. Sometimes I don’t know what they are thinking when they prescribe things. They think nothing of giving you one med for a symptom and two meds for the side effects.
I’m sorry that you’re frustrated. Yup your psychiatrist dropped the ball. Didn’t you say you were going on a diet? I think that might affect your mood negatively. Not trying to give unsolicited advice but want you feeling better
I’m not going to starve myself. I just want to eat 3 small, balanced meals a day. And cut out the sweet treats. Nothing drastic. A balanced diet should help my mood. I hope anyway. Thank you for your concern though. Trust me I won’t starve. I’ll still be cooking healthy food for the guys, I’ll just be having less of it. That is if I can get my stomach shrunk. I kinda didn’t realize how out of control I had gotten again. I’ve gained about 7 pounds in the last month mostly due to larger portions and sugary treats.
I’ve come across a supplement that helps me sleep better, it’s called ZMA. I do weightlifting and I take those types of supplements, and ZMA is one of them, and as a nice side effect, it seems to help people get to sleep better. There are lots of brands of it out there. Just look for the ones with the best customer reviews.
Odd. I take melatonin every night and have zero side effects. My only complaint is that I still have daytime sleepiness after 12 hours of sleep. I thought melatonin would give me a distinct sleep/wake cycle, but 30 mg of Haldol is bound to knock anyone on their ass so…yeah.
