Another alternative, of course ,to get people eating less meat, especially red meat, would be to make vegetarian alternatives more palatable.
I’d have much less problem cutting down on meat if that was the case. The trouble is the food puritans operate on a basis of eating food should never be about the enjoyment of it. The will to produce more appetising alternatives to meat probably isn’t there.
i have tried vegetarian meals before and they can be even tastier than meat dishes by far but there is a misconception that if there is no meat in a dish then it is going to taste awful and that is just not true,
i think if less cows were bred and pigs, etc then people couldn’t eat it as much and would have to look for alternatives, its also better for the environment and possibly our own health as well.
meat tax may make it less appealing or it may just make people have to spend more.
That may be true for some, but the proof of the pudding is in trying it. I’ve tried on about 3 separate occasions buying a variety of vegetarian products and having them as alternatives to meat. It’s not been a good experience.
If people want people to cut down on meat then they need to get away from the presumption that it’s always just because of preconceived ideas about vegetarian products that people won’t try them. Some of us have tried them and found them wanting.
It should be about getting us on side not guilt tripping us.
I think that taxing sausage and bacon is a wonderful idea. I don’t like meat that much (except for sausage and bacon), and I only eat meat because I think it is good for me (I think I need the protein).
Sorry but gotta side with libertarians on this. If I wanna eat meat and kill myself it’s not the governments fn job to stop me…
Greedy money making bastards acting like they give a f about our well being again…
Most of the homemade veggie dishes I’ve tried are alright, you can add herbs and spices, I wasn’t trying to guilt people.
its the tax part that gets at me. farmers don’t get that much, the meet plaints make money, and then there is you. the consumer .
I don’t eat lots of red meat but I do consume moderate amounts of chicken.
Yesterday I followed a vegan diet - no meat.
The problem with vegetarian dishes being unpalatable is really only for dishes that try to imitate meat. It will never taste like meat, so they shouldn’t try. Vegetarian meals that embrace their beans and tofu and such, and use tons of fantastic spices, are far superior to meat in my opinion.
But I was vegetarian for four years, so maybe my taste buds have just changed. I occasionally eat meat now, but not often. I highly prefer tofu, because you can make it taste like anything you want. Black beans are another fantastic staple. I eat maybe 6-7 cups of black beans every week.
Homemade vegetarian dishes are better than premade ones, but as far as microwaveable food goes, I prefer vegetarian to meat. Meat gets a weird, rubbery texture when it’s been microwaved. Soy-based products keep their texture better. It’s just a texture that takes some getting used to.
I don’t think punishing people for choosing to eat meat is the way to go.
I don’t eat bacon or sausages often, but when I do, I don’t want to have to pay a fortune for it.
I’m already struggling to get enough nutrition, if meat got any more expensive without the prices of vegetables falling, I’d be in serious trouble.
That’s fine if you like beans and pulses but what if you’re not keen on them. I’ll eat them if I’ve not noticed before buying a dish that they have them, but it’s not a pleasant experience for me .
This article Meat Tax | The Land Magazine says rationing is a much fairer way of reducing meat consumption .
That makes sense. You have a food textures thing, don’t you? Beans are a very unusual texture, unlike anything else.
im vegan and am doing very well…I eat a lot of nutritious meals with veg…it just takes a good sauce to make it extra tasty
I like reading your first postas it is uplifting for a vegan…vegan is a healthy lifestyle

This is why I liked raising my own meat. No one taxed my chickens, pigs, or cows. Plus I respected where my meal came from.
Well I like banana flavour but I don’t like the mouth feel of actual bananas. I’m also not keen on the mouth feel of really ripe fruit in general. Maybe the same goes for beans and pulses.
Do you like banana bread? Good way to get bananas without the feel
I’ve made banana raisin loaf which is cake like before. Not made it for ages though . Since moving here I don’t have any cake/loaf tins.
