Caroline Lucas is wrong – a meat tax would only hurt the poor

I skimmed the article. Well so the poor won’t be able to afford meat. That’s kinda sad. Not fair really.

There seems to be an obsessive drive to want to tax things that disproportionately affect the poorer in society. I can understand the need to reduce meat consumption but the onus should fall equally on rich and poor.

Also instead of just glibly saying " Eat less meat" FFS they need to produce more non meat products that are palatable.
I’ve tried reducing meat a couple of times only to chuck out a load of non meat options that were basically crap. I’m not into beans except for baked beans(which I can take or leave). Neither am I into pulses and lentils etc. I can tolerate frozen soya mince , but tried the dry stuff once and it was disgusting.

Being mainly Scottish with minor Irish my mum was a great soup maker. One of her favourites was lentil soup.

I believe in some taxes and government regulations, but this is worrisome.

I eat mostly meat. It is easy to make or cook and fills me up.

I don’t eat a lot of veggies or fruits. I should though.

I don’t eat much veg. I used to when my wife was alive and well and cooked. I’m getting a bit more now I cook a proper meal once a week with my granddaughter. Otherwise I find it hard to fit in. I have a steamer but have only used it a couple of times.

As for fruit- my staple is grapes and apples. I’ve tried other fruit but it goes over ripe too quickly.
Occasionally I buy those small pots of fruit in juice, but they are quite expensive for what they are.

That’s a bargain priced meal. Even if it was just the Cauli curry, as I wouldn’t have lentils.

I think they’ve started boxes in the U.S.

or least they were talking about it

are you talking about those on EBT?

I wonder if they’re even buying or getting meat.

I see lots in the convenient stores getting pop and donuts.

EBT? What’s that an acronym for ?

How about making vegetables and healthy foods more affordable instead?

Apparently nearly half of all global warming is down to animal agriculture (the rest is cars and stuff)

Veggies and fruit are very affordable where I live. It’s not a problem if you shop smart. Getting pre cut fruit in a cup is much more expensive than the fruit itself. Some people go to the more expensive stores.

Stop eating out. I don’t have kids or a family, so I can afford a steak if I wanted to. They’re like 10-15 bucks.

After rent, most of my money goes to food, cigs, and energy drinks. Doctors refuse to give me a stimulant…it would be much cheaper for everyone overall. I might end up more psychotic though with a stimulant.

I roll my own cigs. In the past couple years, price of a pack of cigs has literally doubled. I cannot afford that.

Food stamps

it’s in a card format

so, electronic something or other

Thanks for explaining. We don’t have a food stamps system here.

I get expired bags of salad for a dollar at my local store

and I like really ripe bananas, can get a bag for 50 cents

they’re fine as long as you eat them right away.
