Hmmm. Funny you should mention 1964, I have a book from 1964 called “The Mind”, which was considered up-to-date for its time. It covers all aspects of the physical and mental processes of the brain (as they understood them in 1964), but the lengthy section on mental illness shows how far we’ve come (or not) today. They broke MI down to Neuroses and Psychoses, with the description that Psychotic patients “invariably” need to be hospitalized. A good read, esp considering “warehouseing”.
I miss the word hyper. I’d get hyper when I was younger. I’ve read some stuff from older books on mental illness. Moron and imbecile were literally medical terms. Jeez
I think they were first used as medical terms, without meaning to be an insult. In time, they entered the mainstream parlance and are now used derogatorily. I might be wrong though.
No, you’re right. “Ret*rded” is offensive now too.
In my language, nowadays, calling somebody “handicapped” is a serious insult.
