Living well with schizophrenia is in remission

She’s been on keto for a couple months and now she’s asymptomatic. I’m jelly. I wonder if she’s ever visited the forum?

She’s a fairly popular YouTuber with schizophrenia.

Ive seen her before. Kind of bland videos.

Not to knock her, I just dont watch them because.

Having schizophrenia is definitely her “thing” when it comes to YouTube. My gripe with her is that she has VERY mild negative and cognitive symptoms. She’s also not paranoid, at least not in a way that makes it difficult for her to go out and do things. I like her but I don’t think she relays an accurate picture of what it’s like to have schizophrenia.

I think she’s voices and hallucinations. I agree she doesnt really speak to me as kind of a more paranoid manic sz.

Same. Keto didn’t work for me other than lowering my positives. I would love so much to have quiet. There’s always noise.

Ive seen a few of her videos. They’re not bad. But yeah shes definitely making a lot of us other sz people look bad compared to her extreme high functioning most of the time haha. Kudos to her though. She probably fights so hard and doesnt give up. And also seems to have a great support network of friends and fam. But some of us, even with all that, just cant recover well. It sucks. Luckily i think im one of those who the meds really help with positives. Even low doses.

Like I’m probably at the higher end of functioning for our community but after my psydoc suggested the keto thing I gave it a go. It worked so well for losing all that weight which was amazing how easy it was to lose…I’d been exercising heaps so that really helped the process but…

Like over 6 months in I’m down to lowest clinical doses of my psych meds and doing great. Even had an increase in my ability to experience pleasure with things so my negatives have improved too. It’s nuts.

I think there’s something profound about this form of approach to mental illness. May not work for everyone but if 10 % tried it and improved we are way ahead of the medicine curve…that is amazing to me for sure.

Did you notice specific improvements after specific amounts of time? I know you’ve been on it for what, Like 8 months now? And you’re just now seeing improvements in negs? @anon82948922 maybe we just didn’t give it enough time? I think the longest I’ve gone is like 3 weeks and I read it can take months before the diet starts effecting mitochondria in the brain.

Yeah. Two things.

I’ve been aggressive with the exercise and it seems to help slip into ketosis pretty quickly.

Second. It does take time and it’s a progressive thing. It doesn’t happen overnight but the improvement is noticeable. It really is and even just for weight loss it’s amazing.

I was on keto for a year. I gave up because I wasn’t getting dramatic improvement and trying to stay keto when your family is not is hell. It’s also not cheap and we weren’t making then what we make now. I have unprocessed my diet over the past two years and it has made a difference for me. More than supplements and as much as keto. Keto helped, but it didn’t make me asymptomatic. I think keto can make a dramatic difference for some, but we’re not all the same so results vary.

Would you mind sharing what’s improved specially? Are voices better? Are you less paranoid? Are you less foggy?

I’d say positives are better. Less noise and although I don’t get voices I get intrusive thoughts. Less pronounced for sure.

Negatives. My mood is better on lowest psych med doses. More application to tasks and actually starting to feel pleasure with doing things and enjoying tasks.

Definitely better concentration and ability to do things like forward planning.

It’s subtle but if it works it works well for those who do it so it’s really worthwhile exploring. I guess I’m lucky but losing 23 kgs ( 50 lbs ) of weight really was the deal breaker for me. The other additions were a good surprise but it’s working for me.

Fibre is important and you need to keep on top of it.

You can get a good carb tracker…it’s called carb manager and it breaks things down so you can see your carbs/protein/fat macros. It’ll mess you up so you can keep on top of it.

Where do you get your fiber?

Vegetables and other things. Get a carb manager. On phone breaks down carbs to carbs/fibre so you can dial it in pretty good. Gotta get the fibre in.

Seems to me she was pretty well recovered since starting the channel. I guess that means zero symptoms where there were just a few before? Imagine if my voices stopped for a few months, that’d be crazy.

The thing is that you really can’t lose doing keto even if doesn’t pack your SZ symptoms in, it’s healthy. It’s not a bad thing if you’re in a position to give it a shot.
