Ive decided I may need to switch directions. I dont know if I can get a nuclear engineering job in the US without a security clearance and I doubt I can get one of those with my condition. In france its easier but I just dont think Im cut out for the job. Im getting my thesis done but its been a botchjob from the beginning
So Ive been looking into low cost comprehensive coding learning options geared towards getting a job in software engineering and I found one I think is good called the Launch School. They do a self paced option with Ruby and JavaScript for full stack web development over like 12 months and a capstone project thats admissions based. Im hoping to do that too
So to you guys, is anyone else trying to get a software dev job? If so is this school good, what options have you looked at?
Programmers make lots of money, it was one of my dream jobs, the other being a Dr. I took a web developer course in college, it was fun. We worked with Adobe Dreamweaver, made websites.
Thanks everyone! Im not too worried about the courseload as Ive done way worse but I am wondering if going to some coding bootcamp for a year is worth it, like will I be able to get a decent job?
Idk well see lol
@vangoghs interesting, why do you think there should be an ethics course required?
Agreed but I would go a step further and say ethics is important for all of STEM. STEM gives us real power to do things, and we don’t want people doing bad things. Unfortunately there are unethical people no matter what you teach them, like this guy who genetically engineered human babies, which bioethicists have warned against…
All this hanging around the hospital gave me the doctor bug I’m waiting for it to go away. Being a doctor looks like fun. Never had any interest in being a doctor when I was younger but I it looked like a nice job when getting let go. I was going to farm for a little when I was younger. Then I moved to the city and had a lot of fun being in the city.
The Internet dominates so much of modern life, so, of course, there should be ethics training for anyone going into the IT industry. A lot of damage is done, without this; some of it has been deadly.
Ethics seems hard and boring. I mean I definitely think it’s essential, but not really relevant for someone starting out. Some schools require ethics, which is great.
I think it’s essential to do well and be a good person regardless.
I don’t really know how to code but it feels overwhelming and daunting. I figure it’s what "i’d like to do’ but then again I’ll probably do manual labor or retail again. Basic stuff. I didn’t really enjoy college since schizophrenia. It’s hard and just depressing and I got delusions.
I also tend to be lazy, have cognitive difficulties, and take the past of least resistance.
I would love to make money building applications but don’t know how realistic that is – probably a delusion and fantasy. There’s all these languages and competition and big companies, which I don’t like.
It’s also pretty damn hard. Knowing computer architecture and computer science and algorithms. I guess it’s much easier than physics or engineering, but still.
I recommend python but I don’t know. I bet you could learn a lot from Harvard’s CS50 course from EdX, because they teach you the ways of coding ‘properly’. It’s hard and I never finished it. They use various languages and is probably the better ones on the web.
Saylor academy is pretty good too. I just don’t like the format. Very texty and stuff.
I never did a boot camp but heard great things from them. Might be better since you are a hard worker and smart and already got a degree. Might not be worth staying in school and you can probably learn on your own, which is great. In your case, a boot camp seems to be the best option here.
I think you will find JavaScript a very elegant language.
I would suggest buying a book on it that starts at Square One. Learn the basics, and understand the framework before even beginning a school course. Then you can Ace it, and be front of the line on your resume
Coding can be very intense, I can tell you that much LOL
@anon28145038 Thanks, Im sure you could do it too! Actually tbh now Im having doubts I can even do a job in this field but I know I can do the bootcamp at least. I know Python pretty well I use it a lot to create plots and manipulate data. Also I used it a lot for numerical methods like interpolation and stuff.
Im doing a course right now on MIT for algorithms to make sure Im good on that, because I dont want my math skills to go to waste lol. Im not sure how much software engineering is algorithms tho
Thanks for the vote of confidence, and check out launch school its a long course but its ‘cheap’ compared to other bootcamps and they guarantee job placement if you complete the program. You have to pass each assessment before moving forward. Might work for you depending what you wanna do
@Cragger Yea Ive heard its really powerful and simple. Ruby has got my attention so far since the back-end portion of the course is in Ruby. They have a prep course for the actual courses so Ive done that already, and I know the syntax pretty decent and I really like it so far, not as good for data science stuff as python but its really cool!
Good advice Im trying to learn as much as I can before I start. Im starting to neglect my masters thesis because of it tho
Thanks @anon4126574 my family already think Im going off the deep end again cuz I wanna change career paths after putting so much into this but I feel its the way to go
@LevelJ1 thanks man, I think so too. I already made a little basic server thing with ruby that talks to clients with an ip whitelist and stuff, but other than that Im a little overwhelmed idk what to do for a project haha
@zwolfgang I find it amazing you can even engage in these studies. Sounds like you’ve got a pretty good grasp of things. As far as your Masters, you got to do what you got to do. Outside of that, I would study whatever language you feel most at home
I know from Talking, you’ve got what it takes to pull this off dude
