sorry to hear that man but it sounds pretty reasonable unfortunately. idk hope you can find out what to do brother, follow your gut!
@LevelJ1 encrypted messenger sounds like a good idea! I think Ill try that. Thanks!
@anon28145038 Im doing the free resources but it feels like they lack guidance, if I wanna get to the point where I can do this for a job I think I want communication with a teacher. Not to say the free stuff is bad its really really good I just think getting my code assessed by someone knowlegable is huge for me
@anon4126574 Its no worries theyre supportive, they just think Ill lose interest in this too lol, but Ive never lost interest in coding. Always found it fascinating
When I took my intro to programming course, I was very glad I had already taken a class in Artistotilian Logic. All programming language is founded on the same logic principals.
@anon82948922 has a less optimistic view of coding jobs, I donât remember why but he probably has some good things to keep in mind.
No matter what job you end up at, knowing some basic programming would probably be hugely beneficial. And you are not exactly correct about US nuclear engineering jobs. To work directly in protected areas of the plant you need to pass a psych screening and can only take certain medicines, but to be an engineer you just stay in the office portion and do desk work.
Thanks @Ninjastar
Yeah I took discrete math in my bachelors it covers logic gates and set theory and stuff so Im good with that. I also took the âweed-outâ computer science course at my college which was CS100 and taught us programming using C and vim and stuff. Was hard but I couldnt have done my masters thesis without that knowledge.
Thats the thing tho is the desk work in nuclear engineering jobs that arent research seem so boring. Id rather either be a maintenance engineer or a researcher, but to do one I probably cant due to psych eval and the other I prob need a phd or stellar grades and resume, which I dont have. Maybe Im just being pessimistic but either way I think knowing how to program like an actual dev will help me in the long run
I have lot of developer friends in I.T. A significant portion of the ones living in North America are now unemployed as their work was outsourced to developing countries where you can get talent for pennies on the dollar. Theyâre mostly not able to get enough paying work to survive now. If youâre in a developing country youâll find work in programming, sure, at exploitive wages. If youâre in a âfirst worldâ country, your odds are not good.
Thats what Im worried about. The people in developing countries probably have to compete their whole lives to do it too, Im only just starting
Ill make something happen though Im sure, I just need an impressive project
Do they work at businesses or server farms those IT guys you mentioned?
Sort of all over. The ones who are still employed are the ones who are older and expert with mostly unsupported legacy langauges. The ones doing the worst are the ones who are studying the newer, easier languages. Apologies if Iâm being depressing AF, but this is what Iâm seeing.
In my own case I am (was) a network traffic and security specialist. Also was expert with deploying collaborative tech (Live Server, Sharepoint, Exchange, etc.) Fewer of us are needed because of the AI built into the equipment now. It 95% does my old job.The newer software is also more easily managed from a central point, much more stable.
If you want to see the competition from other country just look on fiverr.com at the people offering programming services for hardly any money.
Software engineering will always be in demand though. The more complicated stuff.
Low code/ no code platforms are getting better all the time.
Look at the stuff you can do with Microsoft power apps.
my former friend was a math major and graduated. He took some odd jobs like tutoring and accounting jobs and then finally took up software development/engineering in his early thirties. He finished all of free-code camp in record time; took some stanford algorithms on coursera; finished the john hopkins data courses; and stuff. He was wicked smart like you and he sort of already had a programming background as a youth, but ya, last time I talked a few years ago he was making good six figures working 2-3 jobs, one at a start upâŚso anything is possible in the states.
I thought there was supposed to be lots of jobs in programming. Surprised to hear people are going unemployed.
Wow you must be very very very high functioning. You are so fortunate.
Thanks everyone. At this point maybe to stand out and get a job I need networking?? Like linkedin stuff but Im paranoid about that. Its gonna be hard for me to find a proper job sending resumes cold without a social media presence
Software engineering seems more businessey and about personality in interviews and stuff than the scientific field Im used to. Am I correct in saying that? If so Im screwed in this field then lol I am super anxious with rock bottom self esteem since psychosis
