Hello, everyone, a member here mentioned that ketogenic diet is good for sz treatment, and I googled it and found that this may be true. Here is one example: “https://lowcarbdownunder.com.au/science/the-ketogenic-diet-and-schizophrenia/” I think you should all pay attention to this study.
“A research project led by Associate Professor Zoltan Sarnyai of the Centre for Bioodiscovery and Molecular Development of Therapeutics suggests that the high-fat/low-carb ketogenic diet may be effective in the management of schizophrenia.”
Nowhere in the description of that study does it say that it can cure sz. If a diet change could cure sz, I’m sure we’d know about it. Furthermore, this is a study on mice. We will have to wait and see if this effect can be replicated in humans before we can conclude that it is helpful.
That’s also what I said, that this MAY be true, no that this is true for sure. Why not try? Not by quitting meds, of course, but by taking this diet in parallel with meds.
I think it’s extremely unlikely to be true. If it were, we would most likely already know, and in the least, the study wouldn’t be worded that way. And a personal account is almost completely worthless scientifically.
I just ate ketogenic jelly beans. No voices for an hour.
That’s not funny.
I did research on this in the lab my freshmen year of college only it was in treatment of autism. It is currently being used as an early intervention treatment for children with autism. It does show promising improvement but comes along with a lot of negative health effects because it is not a healthy or nutritious diet. It still has a lot of work that needs to be done to improve it…
I’ve never heard about it being used in treatment of sz. Also I know with autism it’s very important to use on children. I don’t know how that would translate to treating sz because a lot of times symptoms don’t manifest until young adulthood which would be too late thus making treatment ineffective…so yeah needs a lot more research.
I love carbs so that would be really hard for me.
I done the keto diet for 1 month then gave up. I couldn’t deprive myself of food like that for the rest of my life , it’s rediculously hard…honestly. I had a different kind of energy but it was a weaker energy than what you get from carbs.
Ketogenic diet is only given to kids. In adults, it’s called a low glycemic diet, and it’s slightly different. Sorry, it’s just a pet peeve of mine. I know several adults who are treating their seizures this way.
I do not know how about that study but I have definitely noticed that diet has an impact on how I feel. I had been vegan for over a month but had to get back some animal products due to my worsening mental state: lower mood, suicidal ideations, paranoid thoughts. Since I got the eggs back (despite having taken b12 supplement when having been vegan) my mental state drastically improved. They say that plant based vit. b12 is difficult to digest, maybe my body then had problems with using supplements and better deals with animal based b12. Also once a week eating fish now… every body works differently and one should suit diet to their needs.
