Keto studies links and discussion

If you read the links then keto is no longer seen as a fad diet and could have major positive impacts on people living with mental illness.

I sent an email to my psych nurse who found it very interesting and has contacted me to tell me to ask for my annual psych review to be brought forward so I can discuss it with him.

The email went like this:

"I have recently been reading about some studies that a ketogenic diet could improve schizophrenia.

I thought I’d contact you about chatting to the psychiatrist about this as before undertaking the diet I ought to discuss this.

Anyway, here are the studies if the psych doesn’t have the most up to date research:

Ketogenic Therapy in Serious Mental Illness: Emerging Evidence | International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology | Oxford Academic (oup.com)

The Ketogenic Diet for Schizophrenia - KetoNutrition

Ketogenic diet for schizophrenia: clinical implication : Current Opinion in Psychiatry (lww.com)

New Study: Serious Mental Illness Improves on Ketogenic Diet | Psychology Today

Keto Diet for Schizophrenia - Erik Messamore, MD, PhD

Here is a 15 minute clip of the interview with a psychiatrist C.Palmer talking about the ketogenic diet for his patients:

I am interested in giving it a try, but would like some feedback if possible.

Obviously, it is not for weight loss as my BMI is 25 and I am not talking about lowering meds for at least for 4 months which is the recommended time for any improvement to be measured.

Thanks for your time and input.

You can forwrd this email to the psychiatrist if needs be."

Anyway, I thought I’d post the links for all to see in a complete place for anyone interested in trying a keto diet.

I don’t think I’ll wait for ages to undertake this so might get underway sooner. In this way the difficult first few weeks will be over and the psych can discuss it with me.

I thought anyone interested could click on the links for the studies.

Thanks to @AhmShere @Kip-Kipper @TheLogician and anyone else who have inspired interest in this subject and links.

I have started to prepare my larder and freezer with keto foods.

Just ordered from a gluten free butcher and will arrive Thursday.

Getting gluten free dessicated coconut is pricey too, so have enquired about that.

My supermarket isn’t reliable for eggs unfortunately so will have to figure a way to get them online,

Getting gluten free nuts and seeds is tricky too. Going to enquire about an gluten free almond nut butter too.

Keto on its way!

I like almond paste but I don’t buy it anymore since they can be very expensive here. Especially the organic one.

Edit: I’m going through a biscoff spread phase.

I was keto for about a month and my depression was gone it was great! My husband doesn’t know how to cook though so I had to go nonketo for a while at least and nonketo is cheaper if you ask me

Instead of spouting a single anomaly everytime someone mentions keto perhaps check out the countless with epilepsy on a longterm keto diet.

Why not checkout the scientific links in the OP for keto with sz?

If I spouted the death of a single user of AP use, like the drummer from Musical Youth who died from the sz medications, does that mean you will stop using abilfy @everhopeful ? lol

APs are significantly more dangerous than living without meds on a keto diet, what do you think? What about the average lifespan of a sz being 61 due to cardiac and metabolic isssues etc. caused by meds.

"The researchers said in the release that their study “can only show an association between the diet and an increased risk for major cardiac events, not a causal relationship,” because it was an observational study, but their findings are worth further study, “especially when approximately 1 in 5 Americans report being on a low-carb, keto-like or full keto diet.”

From the article…

Thanks for the insight. Getting the majority of fats from unsaturated sources is advisable, I know. Like avocadoes, salmon, oily fish, seeds.

Did you see what abilfy does?

" * neuroleptic malignant syndrome, a rare but serious reaction to certain medications such as Abilify

Abilify Side Effects: Mild and Serious, Plus How to Manage Them (healthline.com)

So it is a question of weighing up the pros and cons, I suppose.

Nothing a selenium supplement wouldn’t have stopped!

I just ordered some multivits for over 50s that have selenium in them.

There are 8 billion people on earth. It would be naive to assume particular kind of diet is best for all. And particular is downright bad for all since it hurt few people.

One has to keep in mind inconveniences brought on by something like keto along with unknown health risks. People who do keto are choosing quality of life over length of it.

Of the treatment resistant schizophrenic people keto doesn’t help around 20% peeps. It helps them lose weight but much mentally. But you have to take into account that it help 80% of treatment resistant people. Which is huge. These people would be cycling with ECT otherwise.

Something more convenient to eliminate.

So the third video down has some great advice on it about getting clinician advice, like a back up plan from a psych nurse for the first couple of weeks as you adjust to ketosis,

Could need extra meds for the duration for example.

Don’t stop the diet abruptly or symptoms will return.

Wise advice for anyone consdering doing it.

I have an untreated hormone disorder. I have a disease that impairs and causes the tissue in my nerves and muscles to wear thin over time. I have lung issues now as well. I started taking Gaba supplements, Magnesium and vitamin D and am slowly seeing results, also trying to change my diet.

I was skinny and vegetarian when my symptoms started 16 years ago. I was super active and engaged. My diet did nothing to prevent the episodes. All I know is that when they put me on medications I kept gaining more weight and it messed with my metabolism.

Speak to your gp and psychiatrist aabout keto diets. I just know what i have gleaned from the internet so far.

I wouldn’t know where to begin with an untreated hormone disorder. Watch the 3rd video down in vyom’s post to see what the psychiatrist says about metabolic disorders. You may learn a thing or two, I certainly did.
