Just moved to a smaller community

Sorry I’ve been gone from here for so long. My husband and I moved from a million+ city to a town of around 15,000 people(about 100 miles away). It’s easier to get around, and life is slower. The entire moving process(lasting about 3 months)has been super stressful. I’m still not all unpacked because of the seeming unending repairmen coming and going.

Our home ended up being a fixer-upper due to the previous owners’ tenants trashing the place. The whole place had to be repainted, and one room had to be re-carpeted due to cat piss in the old rug. And the bathrooms were awful.

But things are starting to get better now. Almost all the work has been done and there is an end in sight.

When we bought this house we were able to get extra money from the sale of our other house. Good thing. Repairs aren’t free. We hire independent handymen. One guy is a vet who suffers from PTSD. He does good work; he’s just slower doing it but he charges by the job not hourly. I’m glad to be able to send work his way.

I missed you guys, but sz.com sent me regular updates so I knew you were all ok. I’m glad to be back.

I know what it’s like to move to a place that needs fixing! It took me 8 weeks of evenings and weekends to tidy up after the last people.

Moving from such a large place to a small one must be an adjustment.

I think you’ll like your new town. I live in a town of only a few thousand. One can’t have many secrets here but it is more intimate living in a small town. I prefer it.

i live in a small down and people are nice but indifferent. calif. i have no idea what they know about me, except the neighbors. be neighborly.

I have the same guess. Wish you best of the luck with your life after this moving @nutcase Personally I like big city because I rely on public transportation. And the public transportation in big cities is usually better than towns.

I’m working harder in my retirement with this “new” home, but it’s starting to come together.
I’ve seen buses around but I’m not sure how often they run, or if on time, etc.
It’s easier to get around in a small town. Everything is closer.

I lived in a small town from when I was 8 y.o. to 18 y.o. I much prefer it for living. But, for “making a living” big cities offer more opportunities. Now I’m retired so I don’t give a cr@p how many jobs are out there.
You are right about no secrets. Everyone knows everybody’s business.
Since I tend to be a bit obviously "eccentric’ I attract the right people. I much prefer my own kind.

When most people are strangers they are indifferent. I am too. I’ve met a few people on my street and they’re very nice. And helpful. One lady told me her husband had a stroke about 11 years ago; he doesn’t work a job but he does handyman stuff. I have a couple doors here that I might have him work on-kind of a nice way to meet neighbors.
I’m a very neighborly kind of gal!
