My doc doubled my Januvia prescription, which we picked up yesterday and I just started taking increased dose today. I just started taking the initial half current dose of this med Saturday.
Anyway, I ate supper and took my normal metformin and glipizide with it at around 5pm. A few hours later my blood sugar was a bit low(around 80), so I decide I could get away with a scoop of ice cream. 30 minutes or so later I’m having like hot flashes, getting all shaky and feeling weird and I take my blood sugar and its 44! Lowest I have ever seen for me.
I called my clinic as a precaution to try to leave doc a message but they ended up paging a different doc since they were closed and whatnot. Basically told me to do what I had already done, which was to eat stuff to get it back up. Also to reduce med back to half and contact doc asap, which was my plan already.
I apologize if this post is not completely coherent also. I am still a bit out of sorts from the low BS.
Glad you are feeling better. My mom has diabetes and one morning a few months ago she woke me up and said I had to call 911 she couldnt walk and something was wrong. the diabetese caused her ankles to break, and i think it relates to the CMT/Bone tissue illness we have also so I am not trying to scare you–she takes metformin and has high blood sugar so i think thats the milder form of diabetes but i am praying for her or thinking of her every day that she is able to walk again she is in a wheelchair and my dad is taking care of her all the time, her fam came to visit etc. and are coming tomm again to visit and help out–im sorry you have blood sugar issues–i know somoene who says he has to take three insulin shots a day plus metformin to keep his blood sugar under control. Im really sick right now but not with blood sugar issues at least–i have lung issues maybe COPD idk–
That’s scary! I’m glad you’re OK. I keep glucose tablets on hand. They spike your blood sugar up really quickly. You can get some at Walmart if you’re interested. They’re flavored chalky tablets that dissolve fast and get into the bloodstream fast.
Glad you are okay. Yes, quickly drink 8 0z of juice as that gets into your system the fastest and check it every fifteen minutes. Once it’s back to normal, eat some protein! It’s always scary when it happens.
Thanks @anon55031185 . Yes, wish we wouldve had the orange juice around. Instead I ate a brownie and had a soda. It was way high in an hour, but oh well. Over did it ;p
What I suggest is getting baqsimi. It’s an emergency spray that goes into your nose, and gets it quickly back to normal. I carry it with me everywhere in case of emergency. You probably consumed too much sugar, which is why you got to eat the protein to get it to stabilize, or it will spike and then crash on you again. Oatmeal is great got that. You could also buy glucose tablets from the store.
The whole incident was a little weird. I had white bread(with hamburger) with supper about 2.5 to 3 hours earlier. I don’t usually have white bread because it raises it too high. You would think I would have had a slow carbohydrate sugar thing going on still at that time. On top of that, i had the bit of icecream when bs was around 80, which you would think, would have been raising it as well. It’s just like my insulin production just went into overdrive all the sudden. Weird stuff…
It’s gotta be the new med throwing things in a weird direction, because this is only the 4th day I’ve had it and the very first day on increased dose, and I have never has bs that low that I’m aware of.
That’s the same thing that happens to me with the hot flashes. I haven’t really been checking my blood sugar though. I asked.my pdoc about this and he said hot flashes aren’t associated with low blood sugar. But there’s one other person who also says they get hot flashes as well. That makes three of us at least.
It was like hot flashes and sweating and shaking. I looked it up and did not see hot flashes listed either. Maybe it’s not the right description. I just know that I felt unwell, shaky, and was sweating. Maybe I am not using the right words to describe it.
Edit: also confusion and difficulty coming up with words.
Another thing to consider, your body gets stressed when your blood sugar swings in a short span of time. So it could be having trouble adjusting to low, high and low. That happens to me when it’s swinging, and your body is working to adjust. So glad you feel better now though. Scary.
