I'm not sure what to do about my blood sugar

My blood sugar has been behaving weird lately. Going way down and me having to eat sugar and carbs to bring it up.

Yesterday at work I had to munch on candy every 2 or 3 hours to keep it up. Then it would shoot way up and shoot way back down. And repeat.

Tomorrow we are going to be on the floor and not supposed to have food with us. I cant call my doctor probably until lunchtime. I dont know if I should take half a dose of insulin in the morning and then call and leave a message for her at lunchtime letting her know what ive done.

Im not even going to take my insulin all at tonight becausee I took a nap and woke up to the sensor thing warning me I was at 68.

I just dont know what to do. Its risky not having some candy on hand to munch on if it goes low fast.

I dont see how I have any choice but to keep some candy in my pocket.

HOpefully if I tell them ahead of time, they will be ok with it.

So, I guess my plan at this point is to take half my dose of insulin and put some candy in pocket in case of an emergency.

Maybe you are on too of a high insulin dose?
I would speak with your doctor ASAP

Keep some jelly beans in your pocket…that’s what i carry around with me for when my sugar tanks. They won’t melt and it’s easy to eat a few surreptitiously without it being too noticeable if you have to palm a few into your mouth. And you don’t have to unwrap them. Or get actual glucose tablets from the pharmacy so that if they ask what you’re eating you can say it’s for your diabetes.

I wish that I could @Wave . They make it nearly impossible to speak directly with your doctor unless you have an appointment. The best I can do is call and leave a message with nurse at lunch. They arent open in these off hours.

THanks @WhiteRaven and @Wave

I think all this running around lately with everything going on has reduced the amount of insulin that I need, because of all the exercise and activity.

The glucose tablets are good cuz they come in premeasured 15 gram doses, so you can figure them into your meal plan as 1 carb if you do that. But i agree that your doctor maybe needs to adjust your insulin. Do you use a combo of short and long-acting insulin? I find that works better than just short acting insulin.

No, I take Jardiance, Glipizide, metformin and a long acting insulin twice a day. I am going to stop the Jardiance next month though because they are charging me 125 for a 30 day supply on the co pay. I did not take my nighttime insulin last night and wont be tonight either.

This self adjustment and guesswork is honestly a bit nerve wracking , but I dont have much choice.

I’m sorry you’re going thru all this with everything else you’re doing in your life right now. You are an inspiration to me @Bowens, i don’t know if you realize that. I admire how you keep fighting and doing well!

When they say ‘no food’ don’t they mean like cookies or a candy bar or something like that? It would seem that having a few pieces of small candy in your pocket should not be a problem if you’re not eating it every two minutes. I think if you want to reveal that you have diabetes that it should be no problem to keep 7 or 8 pieces of candy in your pocket if you explain why you need it. Like WhiteRaven said, having some jelly beans or Jolly Ranchers or lemon drops or something like those on hand would be good.

Thank you so much @WhiteRaven . I called their emergency on call doctor and came up with a plan for tonight and tomorrow.

Thanks @77nick77 . Yeah, youre right. They really should have to understand that. I will talk to HR in the morning and let them know I need to keep some emergency sugar on hand…or maybe I can talk to them tonight , thru the app. IM not sure. Im going to be up a couple hours anyway.

If you are a diabetic, work has to make exceptions about keeping foods and emergency sugar on site for you. Legally they can get sued because they denied you access. I use juice boxes and koolaid jammers that are small and can fit in the pocket. Also a bag of nuts.

RIght. I figured as much. I sent a message to HR anyway. I dont think someone dying from low blood sugar is something they want…but I’m dotting my I’s and crossing my T’s anyway, to be sure there wont be any problems down the line.

Yes just communicate with them. If you have a medical emergency they will say “well he never told us” if you tried to get them to pay medical bills incurred from the emergency.

In order to keep my bs up since talking to doc, I have had an orange, chocolate milk, a little beef and carrots(i know this one wont raise much), and a box of raisins. It just keeps going up for a bit and then dropping again. This is the same problem I had at work today. I have to keep fighting to keep my bs up. IDK what the ■■■■. I dont care what anyone says, I am reducing my insulin in the morning. Thats just the way its going to be. I know the way my body is reacting better than anyone. I just cant keep fighting this downswing with excessive amounts of sugar.

I dont know much about diabetes so take this comment with a grain of salt but isnt sugar bad for diabetes? Like i know sometimes you have to have it in case of emergency if it gets too low but wouldnt complex carbohydrates be a better fuel in general?

Btw you started a new job right? its a physical job? i imagine your blood sugar regulation would be much better with all this exercise now so yea probably doesnt need as much exogenous insulin to function. I understand your frustration because its a new situation but look on the bright side because technically your in a better situation now. Just need to find a new groove with the new increase in activity you have. Best of luck man, hope you feel better.

Thanks @POET .

Yes, I think its potentially a good sign…but that doesnt change the fact that its dangerous to go low…and I have to stop that from happening somehow.

i just woke back up to 88 and had an orange, chocolate milk and a hard candy…

I had no choice. On call doc said to not go below 100 anymore. Not that I could help it while I was sleeping…

As far as carbs go…I had mashed potatoes with supper and later I had some chips after blood sugar went low.
