Schizophrenia describes the illness better than SPD. Sz means a split mind which is a split from reality whereas spd is only sensory like hearing etc and not delusions or disorganized thoughts etc
"The term SPD doesn’t cover delusions or disorganized thoughts"
But doesn’t the last two words…‘perception disorder’ cover those bases?
Idk what you mean by perception then. Not sure if perception covers disorganized thoughts.
‘perception disorder’
Your perception of many things around you is skewed while psychotic. The way you interpret and perceive information is out of whack.
I guess it could work as our perception of ourself is also skewed.
But really the stigma will be attached again to the new term. I dont think a new term will get rid of stigma as long as we have schizophrenics going off meds and doing crimes.
Sensory- Dealing with the senses
Perception- How information is interpreted
Disorder- Disorganized, mixed-up, confusion
I would call it sid or stress induced disorder
SPD Social Party Deutschland. That name is taken. I am happy with the word schizophrenia. It doesn’t mean to me violent, abusive, aggressive and unpredictable ( that is maybe called a psychosis.)
lol. Acronyms are not first come first serve. There’s plenty of stuff that is abbreviated that overlaps into other abbreviations. For a quick example: PC can mean personal computer, politically correct, or police constable.
You are correct to say schizophrenia is not a splitpersonalitydisorder even i am like dr.hide and Mister Jekyll. Maybe schizophrenia is the familyname for various disorders like phobias, anxiety or any other mentality disorder.
Reality dysmorphia
Overactive mind disorder
I think it would be good to rename it, hell why not no one from the normal world knows what it is anyways
"no one from the normal world knows what it is anyways"
Great point! Which is exactly why us schizophrenics should be renaming it and not the doctors or media.
psychosis spectrum disorder i always too thought was not a bad name. but it just crossed my mind, that a very small number of people with schizophrenia never have psychosis. you can have just negatives and cognitives and still be schizo.
I think the stigma surrounding the label schizophrenia makes it seem like were all paranoid, talking to aliens or something.
Should we call schizophrenia “Stigma” ??? As we are already stigmatized with diagnosed sz.
A lot of the symptoms have nothing to do with perception or the senses. Many people with sz don’t even hallucinate.
The psychosis spectrum is already a well-established and well-used term so that name is ambiguous and easily confused with the current meaning of the psychosis spectrum.
Also (in case you didn’t already know this) there is already a decent movement and pretty broad support for changing the name among health professionals. But no agreement yet as to what would be a good name.
'A lot of the symptoms have nothing to do with perception or the senses. Many people with sz don’t even hallucinate."
I don’t hallucinate or hear voices, but my delusions of reference and delusions of persecution are certainly covered under the ‘sensory’ label.
I input information incorrectly while psychotic…thus the perception disorder.
There’s also negative symptoms, symptoms of thought disorder, catatonia, and (maybe the most important of all) cognitive impairment.
