I emailed the disability and social security minister about if I could volunteer for the department of disability and social security.
They replied and one of the stats they told me about was that autism makes it hard to be employable too. I had no idea so few people with autism had work. Opened my eyes. Disability comes in all forms.
As an autistic person myself, I’ve always thought schizophrenia was my real issue. But now I know, mentally, I’m just a struggler (more than the average person for lack of a better description).
I agree, I was also really surprised. I figured it was 50 - 60% but you’re right, soft skills are arguably a lot more important imo. Politics is rife in the workplace in my experience
Also agree, government is so much more friendly to disabilities compared to the private sector here in the UK at least
I’ve currently made a CV requesting wfh adjustments - I think you’re right that it’s becoming more common, especially for the public sector. I just hope it comes to fruition for me too.
A big problem is that many of us on the spectrum are unable to read or interpret social cues properly leaving us with the social skills of a baked potato. Makes getting through a job interview and then keeping employment challenging.
