Is this akathisia?

Hey all.

I am on 20mg of Haldol, taken once nightly. I think I have developed akathisia, but I’m not sure, so I wanted to ask you all.

For the past 2-3 weeks, every night I’ve taken this medication I end up not being able to sleep because I am extremely anxious and I end up pacing and worrying all night. This is really bad, and I’d rather it never happen again.

Can any of you be of help? Thanks.

Are you feeling an urge to pace during the daytime too? When I had akathisia I did laps around the apartment and watched movies standing up. If it’s only affecting you at night, it might not be akathisia.

It’s usually during the day or so after I take the med, then it calms down until I take it again. I just say it comes on at night because I take the med at night

Have you tried asking your doctor about propranalol or cogentin? Those are the most commonly prescribed meds to fight akathisia. You might find relief from them and not need to change your meds. I had to change antipsychotics over and over until I found one that gave me very little akathisia, then we lowered my dose until the akathisia went away.

Are you moving your hands and feets too much in bed? I had that while on Latuda and pdr fixed it with Benztropine.

I think I’m gonna ask my doc to take me off Haldol, gonna call him monday. Thinking about Seroquel maybe, haven’t been on that.

I was on Haldol for 8 months.

I had to take 20mg Procyclidine and 30mg of Diazepam to treat the Akathisia

I recently tried Haldol as emergency PRN and it made me feel absolutely rotten

Unfortunately Haldol is a very old medication now, and there are kinder AP’s to be on compared to that drug

all day, just starts at night because I take my med at night. I really liked this med before this side effect, been on it for over 6 months and it’s done great.

Maybe it’s akathisia. I used to take Akineton in my country. It relieved it and made it stop after a few days. I had akathisia 3 years ago. Not ever again
