Is Therapy the same as Counselling and does it help schiz?

Hey guys i was wondering if anyone can tell me if therapy is a good way to go or Counselling. My friend @Jimbob didn’t think it was a good treatment option for sz but i am contemplating seeing someone privately, I would rather prefer some DBT but i just want someone to work through it with me, my pdoc who i saw yesterday said he didnt think counselling/therapy would help as my personalit disorder is so mixed and varied. (btw, i dont think i have a bad personality) its a strange feeling of something be wrong ontop of the main thing that is wrong, sorry its kryptic.

I go to therapy to help me find new coping skills to help with my schizoaffective bipolar type disorder. It also helps to process traumas and other things I need support dealing with. My pdoc loves that I go to therapy on a regular basis and I do a combination of medication and therapy

yes it helps to work through your issues and get emotional release. You cant heal from mental trauma without it a lot of the time. Having an expert, whether its a therapist or a priest or someone, helps you to be able to label thoughts and emotions and understand how to handle them, and the healthy way to express them, and helps you on the way to doing so.

I don’t think therapy by itself will help symptoms, but when combined with meds it can do good things. I do a lot of CBT with my therapist to help me reframe my experiences into more positive thoughts and behaviors.

that sounds like something i wish i’d had but it doesnt happen here, we dont get therapists on the nhs, its a private thing.

I have been in therapy for thirty years and sometimes have a counselor but I thought they were pretty much the same thing. Maybe just a difference in schooling. I have met many fine people, I don’t recall much I don’t like. I saw my therapist today. My clinic requires me to see a therapist if I’m to see a pdoc but I could choose to go somewhere else. It’s of my own free will.

If you are able to, I’d recommend it. You just might need to go through a couple different therapists. Some arent a good fit for some people. Make sure to shop around and look online at specific psychologists profiles and what they treat and thier psychological interests and specialties are beforehand. I think people with sz and/or any other mental health issues coule benefit from it. Just need to find one that fits right. At the very least it could be an educational venture. You’d surely learn at least a few things if it doesnt work out.
If you have access or some spare money for it I’d say do it bro!
Try to make sure to go in with at least some idea of what youd like to work on specifically. Like mood problems, worrying thoughts or anxiety etc.
Good luck!

Do you have bpd or something? What personality problems do you mean? Cause if so, dbt is awesome like you said. Ive done a dbt group therapy thing for a while. Was great.

There are some differences between a therapist and counselor, but there is a lot of overlap. Counseling is usually short-term whereas therapy is usually long-term.

I think it would be better to see a counselor if you’re having problems with your marriage, if you were sexually assaulted, or if a member of your family dies.

I think it would be better to see a therapist if you have an anxiety disorder, depression, or an eating disorder.

My examples are just a few examples among many.

I have MPD ‘mixed personality disorder’ i’m looking at the stuff my sister gave me to read from the Mind website which is a great resource in the uk, it looks like i am practicing a lot of the coping strategies that i need, i seem to have naturally acquired coping tools, it also looks like dbt might not be a good fit, tbh i looked at it all and it looks like i am the only way to deal with this myself, looks like i am on my own with it but i might try a therapist anyway.

True. Not sure what mpd entails. But no harm in trying a good therapist i reckon still. Especially if you want a knowledgable person about mental health to vent to or talk with. Books can only go so far sometimes. But seems your personal research and self help stuff is doing a good job.
Peace.

MPD - Mixed Personality Disorder, i have various parts of different personality disorders (more than one) so ar i have been able to relate to traits within cluster a b & c so its across the spectrum :frowning: minus anti social, ocd… i was told it was mostly anxious, avoidannt, dependant mostly and it makes sense but with a lot more other traits. its not a bad thing but its just my way of thinking, not that i like the term ‘disorder’ though…its better than sz i guess (maybe)

Counselors are good at giving practical advice and therapists usually implement techniques like CBT and DBT

I much prefer counseling

I see both a therapist who acts like a counselor and I actually see a counselor

I like them both and find them both to be helpful

Does your pdoc no you personally? Or is he making there assumptions based on seeing you for 20min every so often. I think therapy works, even if you have a personality disorder  its always good to unload you bagage on to a neutral source.
