Is safe sex, I mean masturbation okay?

Is safe sex, I mean masturbation okay?

Is pornography okay?

Masturbation is perfectly okay. Pornography I don’t know about. I watch it occasionally, and I don’t think it has done me any harm. I have come across people who were addicted to it, though.

It’s definitely safer.

Yes, it’s all fine.

There are seven billion dying people here for completely other reasons.

They used to say in victorian times that it caused mental and physical ilnesses, but our understanding has improved since then.

When I was younger I used to jack one off 2x a day. Once in the morning when I woke up and again at night before bed, mostly without pornography.

I’d say all things in moderation! and If your doing it 5x+ a day or spending hrs watching porn then you might have a small problem

Absolutely. This has been discussed before - I recommend you read up on it:

Not right before a boxing match. But at the appropriate time it is perfectly OK. It is a perfectly natural thing to do. When I was a kid they said it would make you grow hair on your palms, lol. Obviously that’s not true or else 99% of the population would need to comb or shave their hands every day.

Make time for yourselves during National Masturbation Month in May

You may be surprised to find out that May is National Masturbation Month!

The concept was started in May 1995 by Good Vibrations, the first sex-positive and women-friendly sex-toy shop in California. The focus was to raise awareness and promote masturbation as a healthy, safe and natural way to express one’s sexuality, thereby removing the shame and stigma. The move was in response to the president at the time, Bill Clinton, firing the then surgeon-general Jocelyn Elders following a speech she gave at the 1994 United Nations World AIDS Day.

I keep telling my clients that masturbation is a great way to explore and learn about their bodies.

Elders was asked by an audience member about masturbation as a way of discouraging risky sexual activity among young people. She responded “I think it is something that is part of human sexuality and a part of something that perhaps should be taught”. As a result she was forced to resign from government. The people at Good Vibrations were astounded - it was one of the most sensible things they ever heard a government official say and she lost her job and also her reputation!

Physiologically? Yes, beyond any doubt.

Neurologically? Pretty much, but see below.

Psychologically? If one is not in severe conflict about it.

Emotionally? So long as one does not develop tolerance and addiction by using masturbation as crutch instead of coming to grips with the reasons the crutch is being used.

Many sz pts present with this particular conflict. In most cases, they come from very severe, authoritarian, perfectionistic, hyper-moralistic and often religious orthodox / fundamentalist or even religious cult backgrounds. If that is the case, you may want to find a therapist who is certified in either rational emotion behavioral or cognitive behavioral therapy (REBT or CBT).

See Rational emotive behavior therapy - Wikipedia and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy.

Rational emotive behavior therapy is like “hey go jerk off”

Almost literally

I studied RE therapy and was amused and realized it had been used on me before

Meds made me do it a lot less

Yeah of course why not? There is also good evidence that if you maintain masterbation into your 50s , it cuts prostate cancer risk. There is a slight minuscule risk of early onset prostate cancer , if you masterbate too much in your 20s / 30s apparently. Anyway google it.

Pornstars are heroes possibly and flesh lights are better but the flesh light gods my get you stricken by lightning

Growing up in a religious setting, I was told masturbation is wrong, and Islam teaches that, too. Personally I find it is a good release, but I always felt dirty afterwards. Its like gorging on too much food - nice in the moment, but it has an anti-climax (excuse the pun!) in the end. My religion teaches it is unhealthy, and if you want to control your desires, you must fast. But its much easier to stimulate oneself! Just don’t do it too much.

I was addicted to masturbation when I was a teen and it just created problems and a lot of poor self-worth. Sex is healthier - as long as its in a committed long term relationship. Call me a religious nut, but that’s my two cents on the matter!

As for pornography - that is wickedly bad, because it degrades women to sex objects, and creates unnecessary lust. I hate it, as a woman, I think it’s disgusting and degrading.

If you want to see naked women and have sex, get married!

Well, ya know, I’m forced to say that more seriously I took what I had been taught as a boy in fundamentalist Xtian church, the more depressed and anxious I became. I can surely see the value of acquring a sense of ethics and living by functional moral principles, but masturbation in moderation did not make me more depressed and anxious. That said, masturbation to excess very much did.

Ok then stop doing it and leave the rest of us alone.
