Is religon scary to you sometimes?

Anything that can turn a normal person into a fanatic should be scary, be it religion, politics, etc.

Some religions more than others. On a more general note, I’m always less than thrilled when someone tells me I have to reorder my life and customs around the improbable, invisible being that they communicate with and I don’t. To me, this is the very reason AP meds exist. Wish they would just take their pills and stop bothering me.

Portions of religion are scary. To get people to believe. It’s obviously a control mechanism. A product of people thinking that others can’t think for themselves. Whether or not this is true I don’t know. I would hope in a better culture people would learn to think for themselves without the fear of hell in their lives.

What if this is hell for us?

Not for everyone. I’m having a good, if somewhat busy week.

Currently I’m happily occupied with bagging leaves outside, just taking a break rn.

I spend a lot of time thinking about religion now. Probably more than it deserves. To bad this site isn’t open to religious debates. I need to find a general discussion forum that runs on the discourse platform.

Religion? Huh. Religion is no scarier to me than humanity it’s self is. I hide from humanity far more than I do from religion though. I can accept that as long as no one’s crusading for the true faith or anything, that religion does good in people’s lives as well as in the community.

It’s easily distorted though, as it can read many ways at times. The fact that Jesus’s point of view became the justification for stepping on people all over the world, well that just doesn’t jive well with it’s self nor me.

But no, religion is not scary to me, people are.

I used to frequent a site called Christianforums. They offer a lot of religious, political and philosophical debate between atheists and Christians.

Yeah but I just love this site. It could become home to some of the greatest topics if that were its purpose. I forget it’s a site about sz and helping SZ people. Not necessarily just a place for sz people. It will never serve as the seed of great change. The software is so advanced though. I often contemplate starting my own forums.

Okay you’re totally right let’s just close this one guys. Get at me if you have a forum you go to…

Most forums use some version of vBulletin (this site doesn’t, as far as I can tell). It’s very easy to set up. I don’t know how many web forums are the seed of great change, though. That might be asking for too much from a web community (with exceptions like Twitter or 4chan).

I have a tendency to be unrealistic. But great change to me is just affecting a few people. A place where people are committed to being open minded. I do believe in a ripple effect where affecting a few people results in the affection of many. The potential is there.

He already said what he would do in revelation 2 & 3

ā€œI have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.
So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate.
Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.ā€

Nicolaitans can mean both those who conquer or control the lay people (the regular church members being ruled by a priesthood, controlling pastors, etc), or ministers who lead lives of indulgence, like we see with mega churches taking their congregations money and buying mansions, fancy cars, and sometimes prostitutes…and other sexual acts unbecoming of a minister.

Revelation 3

" I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:"

This just describes a ho hum type of religion, not really into it, and again using religion for material gain and recognition, but not really walking in the Spirit.

I already have that forum…haha. Sharing not though. The other day my mind threatened to end the world as we know it…and I just recognized it as head chatter on steroids but when it comes to the community that will never live nor die I belong to such a thing already.

There are plenty forums that approach this whole area richarddawkins.net is one

Richard Dawkins is a joke. He maintains this facade of militant atheism yet he said grace at his old college. He is happy to denigrate Christians for maintaining their beliefs, but when it comes to the crunch and HE has to maintain HIS non-beliefs he can’t do it. He would much rather ā€˜fit in’ then be made to feel uncomfortable and cause a scene. What a complete tw*t. He mocks the sick and dying for attending places like Lourdes but he won’t stick HIS neck out, unless he can hide behind a book or a TV camera. Presumably that’s what his books are for. It’s easier that way.

Best wishes,
Padster

Interesting fact, Richard Dawkins coined the term meme.

There’s a term in England I believe for this type of perhaps graceful behavior. I think he would be called a latitudinarian there. Maybe the modern term is tw*t though. LOL

This forum gives us ā€œlatitudeā€ to express unusual beliefs but that does not imply endorsement of them. In the same way, humoring someones religious practices may not always indicate agreement about them.
