To get a puppy. The purpose is to breed my beautiful mastif and keep his bloodline going before its too late, he just turned 8. I am helpig another breeder sell some of his mastiff pups and demand and interest is relatively high, even at the really high price he is asking. I do t work so have all the time i the world to raise and sell the pups, plus some added income for something i enjoy would be great.
On the other hand i have 3 other dogs besides my mastif, although all are older in age, 14, 9, and 7 yrs old, plus a tortoise, which is still only a yearling and is very small.
I want a pup from my boy more than anything and know i will regret it for my lifetime if i dont get one, but my wife is sick, though getting better, but not able to go back to work yet. Should i bite the bullet and just do it or play it smart and be patient and take the risk of never getting my pup from a blodline 4 generations in my family?
I could make some serious cash for a little bit of work and cost for the pups and possibly set myself up to cotinue to breed and make money for something i really enjoy doing. I can get upto $1000+ each per pup or even if i clear just half of that i would be more than happy.
I can get a female for a good deal right now and she should be old enough to breed before my male gets too old. I have enough property to house all the dogs until they go to new homes and already have a list being compiled for people interested in the pups and willing to take them. I would do it even without making money, just covering costs so that i dont get stuck with a bunch of puppies without homes.
Totally do it! Life is way too short and you put some thought into it so it must not be an impulse idea. Mastiffs are beauties. So make yourself happy.
Thanks @ThePickinSkunk ! Im feeling the same way. Look at this pretty boy. I need a pup from him!! He is the most well behaved dog and i need him to help me teach the next pup as well. Im really thinking of doing it and i think i have my wife on board. Im only hesistant because i need to get a female, then breed her, then keep a pup, so im actually setting myself up for 2 dogs. 2 BIG dogs!! But the little ones and my male are older so hopefully i don’t end up screwing myself and having 6 dogs to deal with!!!
Oh my gosh! What a gorgeous boy! He looks so happy and I see he has his own bed. By what name do you call him?
Well with the wife on board you probably just leaped over a large hurdle and I think if she’s okay the only thing that’s giving you pause is a little fear. I heard that if an idea scares the heck out of you it’s probably a good sign. And I bet your big boy loves the idea too!
His name is Zeus. He has 2 beds and most of the time he sleeps in my bed between my wife and i with his head on my chest. Makes it hard to breathe sometimes with that big melon resting on me. Its got to be 30lbs at least. He loves to cuddle.
Im pretty sold on the idea, just trying to do my due diligence to make sure im not making any rash decisions, i tend to do so being manic half of the time, then hate what i decided to do when crashing. I just doubt myself and my brain now more then ever and dont want to have any pups of mine end up in a shelter from poor planning or being ill eqquipped. That would break my heart so i really want to have my ducks in a row, but ive been offered a great deal on a female pup and i dont think i can pass it up. Thanks for the support @ThePickinSkunk .
You sound informed on the subject and keeping an ear to the demand on them…plus its a very good breed… He’s handsome and looks sweet… I would say go for it… Sounds like you have the space… And funding for food and shots… Your dog pic shows you all take care of him and he looks very happy… One thing will you have help if you don’t feel well for a day or two?
My wife should be able to pitch in as long as she is healing properly from the surgeries @flameoftherhine. But we are talking about a year or so to breed if i get a female pup, by the time she is old enough to have a litter. My biggest worry is my Zeus wont make it long enough or not be in good enough shape to sire a litter by then. Im pretty sure he will be fine but i always have to obsess about the worst possible situation. Im hoping the pups give me a reason to get me out of bed on those bad days and hopefully i can handle the stress. But its not too stressful playing with puppies all day!!! Ive helped my dad and others raise and groom pups for new homes but this would be my first solo litter.
My gave me the go ahead. I just have to put a fence in the yard and get an outside dog coop ready in the shed for a litter. Running power to it so it will be climate controlled and they will have a sectioned area of yard attached. 250ft of fence and posts to mount and install, plus gates, etc. No small task but i found a guy who has the fencing and will help me do it for discounted puppy from the litter, i told him ill give him one for free!! Hopefully as soon as the weather breaks ill get this fence in and be on my way to being a small time breeder!! Im super excited now that i got the “bosses” approval!!
