I heard someone tell me that you can be a doctor and still have schizophrenia, but I find it difficult to hold a job, do you have a job and are you schizophrenic, how is it going in your job?
Yes, it’s possible.
Lots of SZ folk who have thoroughly recovered and are stable can work.
Work is good
But much of the battle is won by doing something you enjoy and with good people/organisation and culture
Been employed for three decades now. It’s not always easy, but it has been worthwhile for me.
I tend to think it’s things outside of the schizophrenia/schizoaffective that can result in not holding down a job.
I’ve had schizophrenia since I was 19. I’m 63 now and I’ve been employed most of the last 40 years. I’ve been at my current janitor job for 13 years. The job isn’t going great but it’s not bad. I’m tired a lot and slowed down but I must be doing something right because I never get complaints about my work from my bosses.
I worked for a few years on aps but i started to fall apart eventually with palpitations, insomnia, and other effects
the right job really helps
I worked for most of my life
I’m on retirement disability now
Well, I don’t have schizophrenia, but schizoaffective.
I trade stocks. Which means developing strategies and implementing them. And, then, enduring them. It is an unbelievable amount of pressure, the leverage I take, but I think this is what sustains me. Any other job, and I may not be able to hold it.
Not only is it possible, but getting a job that you can thrive in could improve mental health.
I have been working part time the last 6 years in a shop. Before that I worked full time for 4 years, but I couldn’t take the full time anymore because medication induced insomnia wrecked my health.
I worked for the most part after my diagnosis.
But ofcourse we all have individual circumstances. It’s not possible for everyone to work.
I work as engineer it’s really challenging. I forget a lot and not being able to communicate properly makes it tough twice. If I lose my job I would do everything else. There are a lot of jobs also schizophrenics can do.
Absolutely possible. It varies person to person but Ive been employed for 12 years now. I worked 3 part time jobs and went to college full time at one point. Now I work one part time job and it’s about all I can handle. Though next fall I will attend uni. I will only take one or two classes at a time so I don’t get overwhelmed.
Long story short, yes it’s absolutely possible.
I’m having some sort of crisis. I’m about to be 42 and I want to start studying again.
I just don’t know if I’m ready. Also my sleep is worse than ever. I sleep too much, I have insomnia and I’m up for hours and hours.
If only my sleep would get back to normal.
I’m a stay at home mom but no one considers it a job because we get no monetary pay or health insurance. It’s a sad world for us SAHMs.
@sweetpotatopie I am a stay at home too! Although I don’t earn money I consider what I do to be a very important job and it gives me a purpose in life. Before I had kids I worked in retail for a year.
I have a job at a tutoring center. Part time but I get to work with kids and share their germs lol.
Went 6 years without a job after getting sick though, needed to recover enough first.
That is 100% a full-time job. For an average of 22-24 year’s!! Hold your head up high
I like you haven’t either. I wasn’t able to completely finish college but I did earn a degree and nursing license. Unfortunately my longest time actually put in at any position was one year and I was pretty young. I do also have cPTSD. I’m pretty certain that is a large hindrance. All in all, everyone can only do what is comfortable for themselves and with in their power to control.
