Even if you are eating healthy.
Yes it’s possible. But if you have increased apetite from your meds you might have to work hard for it. And most people with sz aren’t able to for different reasons.
I have normal body fat (in no way chubby or too skinny), but I don’t have much increased apetite from my meds.
Sure. It just takes a little extra motivation. The majority of psychiatric medications can cause weight gain, some more than others, and weight gain depends on what you eat, how much you eat and how much you exercise.
This is a challenge but a doable one. Some consistent daily walking for 20-30 min and strictly limiting fast carbs (refined sweets, cakes, candy, bread, pretzels, crackers, rice, pasta, potatoes) will really help.
All older and newer antipsychotics do come with the risk of weight gain and changes in blood lipids like cholesterol. Some medications like Abilify may cause less weight gain than others.
Weight loss basics do begin with diet, lifestyle and activity changes. To be effective the changes need to be permanent.
I am on 120mg of latuda.
When I was on olanzapine I would say no.
Last year I was exercising five times a week.
I did pump and Pilates one day, body combat another day, yoga one day ,jogged and walked for one hour two days.
I still did not tone up and I still had jiggly fat and I was still 55kg.
I did not have a super strict diet but was healthy enough.
Now our instructor retired and we do not have those classes anymore and I might be moving and am feeling a bit down maybe and I just stopped exercising.
The only exercise I do now is yoga once a week and I’m 56kg and it’s not been long.
I think it’s probably very difficult.
When I was on olanzapine I was a vegan and walked for three hour walks every week and was still fat at around 63kg and then I started eating meat again and went up to 74kg.
Then back to 63kg then on latuda finally down to 55kg now 56kg and I am about 160 161cm.
I have a normal bmi.
Thing is I was not slim nor toned even when I was exercising so much.
I did feel better though but it was very very very difficult because the medication made me feel sedated and sleepy and heavy etc while jogging or pumping etc and I had to work so hard to push through and complete it.
Maybe if I was super strict on my diet while I exercised it would be different but I think zero fat and sugar intake and being “too strict” can be dangerous.
I plan on going vegan again but it is for ethical reasons.
I’m losing weight even though I’m maxed out on geodon. It is harder to lose weight as the geodon makes me ravenously hungry, but it is still possible.
Not for me. My DNA test said I have an snp or whatever for getting fat from APs. I used to be skinny and now I’m obese. I don’t eat healthy and exercise like I used to but i can tell it’s the meds for me.
Sure. Anything is possible. But when I tried to lose weight on Geodon and Seroquel it took a little more misery to get it done. My body fatigues easier when I am on antipsychotics. It’s kind of a depleted feeling in my connective tissue. It goes away when I come off my med’s, but I know I can’t do that. The quality of my life could suddenly plummet if I get off my med’s, for a variety of reasons.
Rexulti didn’t make me gain any weight. Not all the APs did. Risperidone and fanapt did. Abilify, vraylar, Latuda did not cause weight gain and geodon actually caused me to lose like 15 lbs.
I was an anorexic during my break and at 5’10 was 135. Then I was put on abilify and since I’ve gained 50 pounds and it absolutely murdered my anorexia. Plus I work out close to 8-9 times a week.
My husbands says it’s possible if you work hard enough. Let me know if you want pointers from my former Mr. Michigan body building husband.

Slim toned body on AP’s? …Hmm…No
But I guess it’s possible if you basically starve yourself.
I was obese as a child but lost a lost weight an amd was then long term slim and toned yo yo dieter on aps in my 20s 9st -10.5 st although I ballooned occasionally Diet and exercise got my weight back down pretty quickly
Then age 35 i got stuck at the fat end
In my 20s i did yoga 4x a week and sometimes did part term physical day jobs like farming organic veg
I ate pretty clean was veggie 10 yrs vegan 6 months and then went back to eating meat and went psychotic for a year
I was bulimic while unwell and had severe reactions to the meds
Then i was psychotic for another year and was slim again bulimic and both long hospital stays i worked out constantly
Then i was put on a new med that has had me only under 11 stone once in 12 years
I ran 4x a week and did a few half marathons but to me above 11 st i was fat
Then i got close to 192lbs
Now lost 30 lbs in 2 yrs
Been a bit of a bad few yrs for exercise
Been obese most of the time
My mum was hit by a car in front of me 9 months ago
She is just about walking… I walk her puppy but mainly sedentary
Feel like I’ve got locked in shock
Not having a car helps and drinking lots of filtered water
Not everyone gets fat on APs. I eat whatever I want.
Yes it is! I have a slim, toned body and I take three different AP’s. My BMI is 23.7 which is a normal BMI. I do a half hour of yoga every night before bed and that keeps me toned, strong, flexible and feeling good. I also play piano for an hour every evening. That burns calories too. I also carefully monitor my caloric intake on a calorie counting app on my smartphone every day. That really helps to keep my weight down. I don’t drink my calories. And, I don’t smoke, do drugs or drink alcohol either.
i slimmed down a bit before xmas, was swimming and doing some pilates but i put it on again even though i do about 6500 steps a day on average it is hard to shift it but with a little hard work and dedication i think it is possible, i’m going to start exercising again hopefully,
it is harder to do things with this illness though, its hard to keep an exercise routine.
You have to look after yourself even if you are not on aps. That means no junk food. I only eat when I am hungry and you should find exercise that you enjoy. I have never had weight gain problems on aps before though (mainly clozapine and lurasidone).
You just need to be on one that is not found to cause weight gain. Also, genetics play a big role, more so than spending time at the gym.
i think its hard to know when i am hungry, my brain usually tells me when to eat and not my body, i know this is wrong but idk if it is a side effect of my med where it messes with the signals that deal with hunger in the brain, i think its the same with drink, i usually dont drink enough water bc i dont get thirsty with dry mouth,
idk if this is a thing but it feel like it.
I dont really get thirsty like that either but I always aim to drink at least 4 pints of water a day.
