Yes at night I have to stop eating to lose weight
Thank you @firemonkey i read them all
The AP’s slow down your metabolism some, and the AP’s increase your appetite some, and the combination is deadly. When I was on Zyprexa I craved sugar - badly. I gained 60 lbs. in 120 days. I don’t know how I did that. In order to gain that much body fat I would have had to have a calorie excess of 1750 calories a day. I know I didn’t gain that much muscle, and I know I didn’t have that much excess water in my system. I have no idea how I gained that much weight.
I lost 50 pounds while taking three different AP drugs. And I’ve kept it all off over the last three years by counting my calories on a calorie counting app. And most important: I never eat less than 1100 calories a day. This is very important. If you eat less than 1100 calories a day, you go into starvation mode and then you start packing on the pounds. The app will tell you what your maximum calories for the day will be. I use the calorie counting app: MyFitnessPal.com It has the largest food data base in the world, making calorie counting a snap. I also never drink my calories, meaning no pop, juices, energy drinks, fancy coffees, or alcohol. And I exercise for a half hour everyday doing something that I love doing. My personal choices are yoga and piano practice. Yours can be anything you like that will lead to fitness.
I am at ideal body weight today and have been for the past three years.
I wish I could say that. I’m about eighty pounds overweight.
@crimby Why not try my methods?
I have my compulsions. I would rather try to lose weight through exercise.
My theory is APs lower dopamine, resulting in appetite increase. Food increases dopamine in the brain.
We learned in our pharmacology class that the chemistry behind it is their blockade of serotonin. (APs bind to serotonin receptors as well as dopamine) I know on a larger level they affect appetite and also fat storage, so maybe the serotonin blockade results in this. Meds with a higher serotonin receptor binding profile cause more weight gain.
Increased appetite, cant get full, decreased metabolism, and lack of physical activity from slowed down movements and drive.
It baffles me honestly. I have to consume 1000 to 1500 calories a day to feel like im not starving and burn at least 700 to lose water weight. I carry alot of water weight now compared to before i got on meds. I even use to eat more before i got on meds. For me it mainly slowed my metabolism down by a whole lot. Im about as active now as i was before the meds so its definately the slowed metabolism. If i consume 1500 calories in one day without exercise ill gain a pretty good amount of weight. My pdoc doesnt even care neither. If i was working i would be screwed weight wise cause id be too tired to exercise after work
Things I have heard why APs cause weight gain (don’t know the evidence behind them)
- increase appetite
- decrease metabolism
- increase appetite for carbohydrates and influence the insulin based metabolism of them
- sedation and negative symptoms can reduce the patients physical activity
- effect the leptin based fat homeostasis system
- change the commensal flora in the gut to a weight promoting flora profile
I am disappointed that so many health professionals (from doctors, nurses to dietitians) seem to think it is solely down to increased appetite and refuse to believe otherwise.
I am so frustrated. I gained 5lbs this month. I am now 5’5 203lbs. The invega sustenna is getting on my last nerve. I don’t know what to do. I have just given up.
How long did it take to lose the weight? Congratulations!
Let me guess they dont want to switch meds bcus it works for positives right? Cause thats what my pdocs say
Wow. Thank you. I notice I eat more junk food while on meds. I seem to make more poor eating choices.
