Here in the U.K. it is harder to find landlords that rent to people on unemployment benefits. They throw in disabled people with the unemployed but a lot of disabled people get more in benefits than all working people working 45 hour weeks at minimum wage.
I want to move out of supported housing into my own place and can’t find anywhere. I want a place with a garden and two bedrooms.
Some place like this which is £500 a month in rent. London prices would be £2000 a month but I’m in the midlands.
Theres a shortage/waiting list big time. Too many regulations and not enough money. Not that profitable.
By the time i get off the waiting list, ill be hopefully working and independent. Plus, i dont do well alone. I get lonely and cant cook and struggle with personal daily chores and hygiene. It wouldnt work. Ill probably stay with family.
There’s social housing but the waiting Lists are many years. Most landlords don’t accept people that aren’t full-time employed. I live in an apartment that is owned by my mum. I’m lucky that she is my landlord.
I lived in one city that was so poor that there was no waiting list. So 10-20 years i guess unless you are ‘grandfathered’ in or something.
My current list is like 4 years long and ive been on it over 2 years i think. Its really nice because its for mentally ill people only…but im not really able or ready for it. Just a back up plan…
I live in the South East, and housing is still hard to come by, purely cos of the London countys spilling over down here.
I got council housed - but only after sleeping in a wheelie bin for six months, Bed and breakfast for 4, and temporary housing, that was full of 18 yr old single mothers with kids running around 24/7 for another 6. And this was before i got the official dreaded SZ Diagnosis.
I reckon that cos your in Supported Housing, your local Authority should fast track you tho.
I live in a major city in the US and rent exceeds disability income. So I live with family and give about 1/2 my disability draw to them. I’ve been able to save some from living at home and now have a fun decision of whether to move on my own or buy a new car.
I live in the US, in the midwest. I’m on disability, and there is the option of section 8 housing vouchers, but the wait lists are years long. I can’t afford to live on my own.
if i had to live by myself my budget wouldn’t cut it to rent a house… but i live with my parents so i don’t have that problem. I do give half of my money to my mum and dad though… and when mum needs something more now and then i give more.
Nobody can afford rent in a major center where I live if they’re on disability. They wind up in smaller towns with low housing costs, but no services and super high costs for everything else. The system isn’t workable.
I know I’ll take heat for this, but most landlords dislike renting to people on assistance. They’re much more likely to have subtance abuse problems, not pay rent, and damage your property.
