My family’s previous generation is from a small poor island off the coast of Ireland, so they had minimal access to proper mental healthcare or just healthcare in general… Despite that most all seven brothers (my great uncles) were diagnosed with either schizophrenia or bipolar, and my uncle that is alive has schizophrenia too… Everyone else had depression. My aunt has a hoarding/OCD problem. On my dad’s side, my dad was sent to a psych ward once but was never diagnosed with anything. His sister (my aunt) has BPD…
Who else here has an extensive family history? I feel like it was bound to happen to me considering my huge family history.
I don’t know how extensive it really is. I just had an Uncle and a grand-aunt with it as far as I know although Dad once said something that made me wonder if there weren’t more. My Uncles are claiming there’s no one else in the family that they know of with it so right now I’m the only one. I want it to stay that way.
From four generations on one side of my family: psychotic depression (2 people), sz/sza (1 person), bipolar one with psychosis (2 people). Five out of twelve people with serious MI. Would that be considered extensive?
I think it all came from my mothers side. She had a cousin who committed suicide and had problems with sleeping around alot, or so I’ve heard as he was dead before I was born. My mother has bipolar, although no idea on what kind because she lives on one side of the U.S while I on the other. And there is a chance I may have had a cousin who is also sz/sza. I don’t know the whole family tree but there is a few gravestones in my family grave yard who share a last name with this person.
my dad’s oldest sister has schizophrenia, so did a cousin who committed suicide. My father has sza, so do I. My dad wasn’t diagnosed until he was 48 though. My mom has major depression and my brother has adhd, autism and bipolar disorder with psychotic features.
According t my older half brother, who I have been talking to since my bio dad died, every man on that side of the family, going back 15 generations has committed suicide before the age of 70, my bio dad was the first to die of something else in all that time, I also have two older half brothers through him, one with Bi Polar w/ psychotic tendencies and the other has SZ like me. I have seven younger siblings by my bio father (one is only six weeks younger than me, damn that guy slept around a lot) all of the males of which have some kind of psychotic disorder. Then on my mother’s side there is Bi polar going back about ten generations and a history of ‘possession’ before that (when you get back that far the family was diehard catholic) most of the problems on my mothers side involved just the women with very few men getting it. so basically be it X or Y my chromosomes suck
