Internet addiction

Does anybody else have a hard time dosing their internet use?

I’ve been off the internet for half a year, completely, which was very quiet and peaceful. But quite unpractical and a-social too. I’ve even thought of becoming a member of the local club of people who live without internet. I also stopped using a smarthphone, and still don’t have one.

But now I’m back online. And I think I need a children’s timer. It’s my go to place to relax and avoid other stuff. Hyperfocussing on something on the internet feels great. For some reason I love diving into some fringe topic on pubmed, and do not love doing my dishes or laundry. Which would be really a lot more useful. Doing a bit of internet seems to be hard.

Do you have smartphone and/or internet addiction? Do you have any tips and tricks?

Thanks…yeah, me too (except for the facebook, that i kicked out). I’m here and on pubmed researching weird special interests and chatting with an equally weird friend.

Does anybody have good ideas on how to find a balance between locking myself out of the internet and being on there all day? This doesn’t exactly seem to be my forte.

I recently got into checking my email a lot. I like getting rid of all the crap i get sent to me. I delete that stuff out of existence! Technology is so easy to get addicted to.

I’m most of the day online. I even need internet to listen to music. And I’m also addicted to music.

I don’t have a smartphone either. Too much stress.

I do my computer stuff on my desktop, but I have installed a program called Cold Turkey. It allows you to do several things. Like make a whitelist of websites that you can visit while the rest of the internet is blocked with a timer or a schedule. You can also block Apps and the entire internet whenever it suits you. You can even block getting logged in to your computer with a feature called Frozen Turkey. I highly recommend it if you have a internet addiction and need a tool to normalise time spent online.

Cold Turkey doesen’t work on smartphones though. The best equivialent I found for smartphones is a app called Spinbrowser(Boomerang parental control)

I am so happy i got the internet to help me pass time. Its not a problem at all. I don’t know what i would do without it and i don’t want to know. Its there, its cheap and effective to study, play and rest.

There are always options to internet. Like reading, watching tv, doing a puzzle, playing solitaire, excersise, eating out, go for walks, playing a instrument, listening to music from a stereo…

But yeah. Internet is probably as addictive as smoking. I still use it more than I want, but I feel my mental health benefits when I am able to take breaks away from it, so I’m figthing it.

Get your point. But my mental health benefit IS the internet

I think I’m addicted to the internet and gaming, but I don’t care, it doesn’t seem to have a negative effect on me. (or maybe I would feel better with less internet use, I don’t know).

Thanks all, for your responses. I’m not the only one, apparently.

@Mr_Hope, thanks, I will try that out. It sounds useful for me.

I love the Internet, been on it since 1995. I spend a lot of time on it. What I think matters is how you spend your time on it and what you do.Think critically about what you read. I’m not addicted but it would suck to lose it.

I wonder how people would find this club without using the internet?

I’m a millennial, I don’t struggle with the idea of being addicted to the internet. It’s culture at this point. Even if I lived in the woods away from everything but nature, the internet would be a priority.

The internet is a tool. You can use it for good and also for not so good.

The internet is like a 2nd brain for us. Especially with the smartphones.

I am not addicted. I am on the internet a lot because of sz negative symptoms. Not much I can do else and I can’t get out of my house. Without internet I would be worse sleeping all day.

Unless it’s harming me. I stay away from the dangers like social media / news / toxic sites.
