Yeah I get the same thing pretty often. I can relate to people thinking I’m intelligent but feeling dumb and not knowing how to carry myself in certain situations. There’ve been many times when I was supposed to do something simple but ended up making a jumble of it. Then people can see how dumb I really feel.
And this brings a clip to mind, if you don’t mind my placing it here.
You ARE intelligent, I believe that to be beyond dispute. It’s just in the applying of it where you have glitches. Seriously man, give yourself credit where it’s due.
(I’m sure you’re more than aware of what a prat I can be, I wouldn’t say it if I didn’t mean it.)
On a serious note, I think you’re intelligent. You wouldn’t be questioning your own capabilities if you were dumb. At the very least, you’re out of the Dunning-Kruger zone.
I always find the articles you post to be very useful, you’re really great at finding information relevant to a discussion.
I haven’t been here long, but it has been long enough to appreciate your posts here. You’re one smart cookie and it’s very enjoyable to read whatever you add to a conversation. Please don’t sell yourself short.
Thanks everyone. I think it’s because I’m very aware that I have areas of cognitive difficulty. As said previously if there was an IQ for dealing with practical non-verbal, matters (constructional,DIY, etc) mine would probably be <70-80.
At times I find it hard to organise my thoughts which I put down to executive functioning difficulties (nb organising and planning). I’m one of the world’s worst for multi step tasks/sequential thinking.
All in all I very much fit into a learning disability(USA)/learning difficulty(UK) profile . That should not be confused with intellectual disability(USA)/learning disability(USA) which is for people with very low intelligence plus other criteria.
People with LDs usually have average or above intelligence but an area or areas of cognitive difficulty. In my case it’s non-verbal/(visuo)spatial, with problems with executive functioning and processing speed .
I don’t know for sure whether anyone else finds it hard to coordinate their thoughts at times, but I’m guessing it would be a problem for some of us.
As for the finding and posting articles- I hope it helps, and is of some interest, but I don’t flatter myself it requires much skill. Anyone here can do it it’s just a case of wanting to do it and being a little fixated/obsessive about trawling through things like news feeds and twitter.
