I'm such a moron (trigger warning - occult/magic)

So I thought that ordering a magic/occult book at 2 in the morning a few nights ago would be a good idea.

I woke up and tried cancelling the order, but it’s too late.

During the moment I ordered it I thought it would be good to face my fears.

It’s not a dark magic book.

What do you all think I should do with the book though?

  1. Throw it in the trash
  2. Sell it off
    or
  3. Keep it and not worry

Thank you for reading, :v:.

I think you should either keep it or sell it/donate it.

You have to remember that it’s just a book it can’t hurt you.

probably sell it or send it back or just throw it out if u feel u need to, i dont think there is any real danger with it but things like that can contribute to delusions and thats no good

Which book, Monte?

Thank you all for the prompt replies.

@Rhubot It’s titled the Middle Pillar, and it’s by Israel Regardie. It’s sort of a psych/self-help/magic book.

I still have mine. I don’t read them, but I have them. I only read one of the two that I got as well.

Also I found more solace in religions that are more to what I identify with.

That’s really cool @anon1571434. Do you also own a copy of Regardie’s the Middle Pillar?

No I forgot the names. It was some sort of intro book and then something about out of body experiences I think. The intro book lost me when it had inductions or w/e that jump you into the group which was basically just soft core bondage. I remember just looking at the drawing of a picture of a butt and being turned off.

Not familiar enough with that one to give a thoughtful opinion on it.

The fact that this is so distressing to you makes me think you should return it or just drop it in a library book slot somewhere.

Thank you @Rhubot. I’ll figure it out once I get the book.

Ever heard of the book “Religion and the Decline of Magic” ? It’s by an English author I think.

Anyways it’s more of a history book on English magic in the 16/17th century.

Not so much a how-to book.

I haven’t read that, but that looks really fascinating to me!

I dunno, that book might be something helpful to you - you seem to have a very (sorry if this is is offensive or off base) Judeo-Christian frame of reference for magic, which invests it with a moral and spiritual significance for you that you find distressing and damaging. I particularly think reading about magic in a ritualistic, liturgical, hierarchical setting is dangerous for you.

This kind of thing, like any religious practice, can be beneficial to one person and harmful to the next. If you learned to associate it more with historical hedge-witchy traditions, which I imagine is what Decline of Magic talks about, it might not be as compelling or harmful for you.

If you feel it’s not good for you , don’t think I’d pass on something that I didn’t agree with to someone else. I’ve had a similar thing happened and chose to dispose of it for this reason.

Oh no, you’re not offensive or ‘off base’ @Rhubot.

I appreciate the feedback, and I do value your opinions.

And I agree. It’s probably time I finally put all the magic stuff down.

I do own Decline of Magic. It’s more history, and data than anything.

edit to add:
I’ll probably donate the Middle Pillar to my library/or local bookstore.

Keep it. You don’t have to read it if you aren’t ready. Having something that scares you like that, and choosing to keep it around, can make it less scary. (Obviously not in all situations, more to do with inanimate objects)

Not to mention this book isn’t anything serious. You won’t be harmed, or punished, or whatever you might be worried about. This book is not cursed, or even magical.

If you absolutely cannot handle it, donate it. Nobody should throw books away :frowning:

It’s up to you. But you might try getting a refund. On Amazon.com I’ve returned stuff I changed my mind about and got a full refund.

By the way, does that book give any advice about where to find a mechanic who won’t cheat you?

For me those things don’t interest confuse or trigger me at all.

It’s a great thing to be able to read books, I can’t focus enough to do that anymore.

Read something like historical fiction, or fantasy, not random weird garbage. If you expose yourself to nonsense the integrity of your thinking will be impacted. You don’t want that.

I ended up giving the book to a friend.
