About a week ago on here a person answered a thread of mine and she stated, “You win.” The post was a brief outline of my life. Working, going to school, Yadda, Yadda, Yadda. living independently for 25 years. We all know the drill. But she meant I won in life, considering i have schizophrenia.
But her words have stuck in my mind. I am going to keep working until I drop in my tracks but it’s difficult because of ever present fatigue, a bad back, and my age (56). I would like think I won over schizophrenia and life. It would comfort me. Oh well, tomorrow is my day off. I will rest up. My class starts January 8th, four more classes to go.
There’s a saying in Poker that you have to “play the hand you’re dealt”. Well, I’ve played a lot of Poker and here’s what I’ve learned:
The best starting hands aren’t always the best cards for that particular board. You can start a game off with A-A (the best hand) or 7-2 (the worst). Starting off with the best possible hand just means that you’re probability of success is higher starting out - for that particular board. But guess what? Any hand can still win the game, and what’s more, Poker isn’t even a one handed game! As long as you still have chips on the table, you can just play the next hand!
The winners in Poker aren’t the ones with the best hands. The winners are the one’s who learn to minimize their losses over the long term. Some of us are particularly unlucky, losing hand after hand after hand. But the interesting thing about Poker is that anyone willing to play can eventually win as long as you have chips on the table. And if you’re still breathing, you still have chips.
Seems to me you’ve had an amazing 25-year streak!
That’s how I think about it anyways. But then again I had a gambling problem and had to be admitted sooooooooo take everything I just said with a grain of salt.
Thank you. I’ve played poker with my friends (nickle, dime, quarter usually) but when I go to casinos I don’t stray from blackjack and the slots. The odds are always with the casinos but I hear that Blackjack has the best odds against the casinos.
Every day I have a good one. Slight symptoms and doing something is a win. Yeah it’s tougher as you get older because the nature of the beast never changes.
I think the hardest thing to tell people is how much psychosis and symptoms take out of you. You never really can. I have some close friends who saw me totally psychotic and they are intelligent people but they have no idea.
I’ve been broken badly a couple of times but I’ve rekindled myself from the ashes. That takes some serious moxy just to achieve! I know you’ve done some serious living too just to get to now and you deserve to have some kudos for that. Keep on keeping on. Winning for me is just another day I’m relatively symptom free and it’s not a bad day!
