I think I've discovered why conspiracy theories are popular now

People just have too much time on their hands.

It’s as simple as that, I think.

A friend of mine just messaged me a video that claims Stevie Wonder can see.

I told him that the video is dumb, scientifically inaccurate, and why the hell target Stevie Wonder?

I mean of all the shitty people in the world you could spend time and energy targeting and making videos about, why Stevie Wonder?

I have recommendations for conspiracy theorist to really focus on, some groups that truly are shitty people: Neo Nazis, Scientologists, Pal Pot apologists.

You may be right.

Retirement did that to my dad.

He was pretty moderate (politically) his whole career and most of my life.

Then he retired, started reading weird books and watching youtube videos,

Fell totally into the abyss.

He’s lost it, man.

All because of not enough to do.

Yeah, I’ve been thinking the same about Antifa Rioters and Maga protests. too many people out of work.

Hugs to you ma’am!

Hopefully your father will come back to reality one day.

I sure hope he stays away from radio shows like Coast to Coast.

I can’t even listen to that show anymore.

I love my sleep!

That sounds legit.

What do you mean? You believe that Stevie Wonder isn’t blind?

That’s aside from my point either way.

I’m kidding, I just find it hilarious that anyone would make that shitt up.

It’s hilarious that we “crazies” point out the actual crazy stuff as pointed out on the other conspiracy thread.

Haha! I know, right?

I think my friend got a little angry with me because I didn’t even watch the video.

I have better things to waste brain cells on. I mean come on, I think finger painting is better than watching conspiracy videos!

“You’re nuts thinking everyone is out to get you, but did you hear about Bill Gates eating babies?”

People with too much time are becoming increasing more common.

I remember watching YouTube videos back in 2011 right before I started on meds and I believed all the crap they fed me.

YouTube wasn’t ■■■■ in 2011. Now it’s huge.

I don’t picture my country surviving much longer with the first amendment is being exploited.

It’s too bad really.

Hoping things work out though.

hm. Why are conspiracy theories on the rise?

In a word, frustration.

When people are scared or disempowered, their ability to be effective and to trust institutions is impaired. Instead of trusting science, experience, effort, and truth, they make up or latch on to woo and stories to regain a sense of control and effectiveness.

People who want to gain and keep power know this, and make conditions desperate so that many who depend on effective institutions are left vulnerable and frustrated, and ready to blame someone. Add to that targeted misinformation campaigns in media (remember Cambridge Analytica?) and you have a recipe for a frustrated, angry, and credulous population that will help keep power concentrated in the hands of the very same people who are holding them down.

This kind of thing never fails to terrify me because its just reskinned blood libel, and every time that took hold, things went very very badly.

I find it odd if none of you people have read the books or watched the videos that you make such strong judgements.

My friend is pro conspiracy and it puts me off him bc i have problems with delusions, delusions that are untrue and fixed, luckily those fixed beliefs have mostly ‘unfixed’ themselves,

So the last thing i need is some bozo talking shite about everything i have learned growing up, they are not beliefs conspiracy theories are delusions and most of these people need help, they try and prove things but their sources are very questionable.

It’s shakes the sensibilities and shocks the public but don’t shoot the messenger, they were once as shocked as you but once it’s exposed they expose. Also I bet you think sex trafficking is a conspiracy theory. It’s an epidemic!

I think America will be fine. Remember that we’ve gone through tumultuous periods before and survived.

Look at how long countries like Italy and France have been around.

Everyone just gets nervous because we’re still a relatively young country.

No I believe human trafficking is a real problem in North America. There’s plenty of evidence about it.

Idk how that ties into conspiracy theories though.
