I quit social media

A few days ago I just kinda got fed up with all the negativity I felt while on it and I deleted the few apps I used. Now I only go on here and text . I actually am feeling a lot better already, I don’t know if it will be a forever thing but the break at least feels nice. I really wasn’t getting anything positive out of it, I just felt like a loser compared to others

Good for you @Froge
I think there are places on the internet that are safe and healthy content.
I think me never being on facebook instagram etc has been a good thing for me.

For me the news has always been a problem and I am thinking of quitting it soon because its causing me anxiety and fear about things that are out of my control.

I completely understand, I know it’s definitely good to stay in the know but it can fuel anxiety and disable some of us. I feel better mentally not really fully knowing the ins and outs of current events but I keep up with election and stuff

I’ve taken a break from Facebook before. Totally understand. Good for you.

When too much time spent in front of screens gets on my nerves, I use software to block everything out.
I used to use “cold turkey” and now I use “freedom.to” and “Appblock”.
It’s really good practice.
The only problem is that you sometimes have to subscribe, and as far as I know there’s no free software alternative.

One really weird thing I do is I’ve bought myself a sort of wooden crate and I lock it with a ‘digital’ padlock where you can programme the locking time.

I’m sorry I didn’t really respond well to the problem you raised, but screen blockers or locks can help you to switch off.
But I did understand that that wasn’t really the problem you were raising.

I do want to spend less time on my phone in general for sure, but I also don’t know how to occupy my time when I live alone, I do interact with my animals a lot and I started a garden, and cleaning and such

Are you into working with your hands or creative projects?

I struggle with negatives. But i want so bad to spend more time being creative. Making things. I have all these ideas stirring in my head but stuck immobilized. But I’m watching YouTube about so i am learning skills when i am ready to.

Me too. It’s soothing

I feel the same way, but they say you shouldn’t compare yourself to others. Just be the best person you can be, and don’t worry about others.

Then I’m glad you deleted those accounts. That’s a really awful way to feel

I totally understand. I deleted most of social media several years ago. It still feels like a relief. I only have snapchat so I can see some pictures from close friends, that’s all I use it for. And on a rare occasion I will look to learn something on youtube, but I don’t have a account.

I’m only on this forum and LinkedIn.

Deleted Facebook and Twitter a while ago. No regrets.

I am able to use Facebook and Instagram without issue as I have culled my friend lists on both to remove people who are only there to be negative and fight. I tried to do the same with Twitter, but it was bad for that before Musk bought it and it spiraled out of control after. I made the jump to Mastadon, which I am enjoying much more.

Just block anyone who is negative and stressing you. I have had to do this with most of my wife’s relatives, but I notice she has started blocking some of the same recently.
