I need to work more

I got promoted to supervisor this year in July. Since starting my new position I have found it increasingly harder to work a full shift. I work 4 10 hour days from 7am - 5:30pm. But I find it so hard to work all that I am scheduled for. I am allowed 32 hours of accommodation time in a month, or about 8 hours a week. Due to my recent mental crash after my manic episode I missed 23 hours of work since October 1st. I really need to work more hours and I don’t have many accommodation hours left for the month.

Why is it so hard to get up on time? I take Modafinil in the mornings to help me wake up and stay focused, I drink 3 cups of coffee in the morning too, yet somehow I always am sleeping too late and using an hour or two of accommodation time because I couldn’t log into work by 7am. Should I request a later schedule? Maybe go back to 8 hour shifts?

I just wish I had more motivation when it comes to work. My new position is so stressful I take highly escalated calls that are transferred to me from a regular customer service agent for the company. If someone calls in and requests to speak to a supervisor, I am the person they talk to. Some people are highly abusive, threatening or just downright mean. I am lucky to have such an understanding manager who also holds my same belief system so we get along well. My performance reviews are all going well, so I do my job well so then why can’t I work a full 40 hour week?!

Working a 4-10 schedule is not easy. Would your employer consider putting you on a standard 5-8 schedule? You might find it easier to work if a daily shift is 8 hrs instead of 10 hrs. It might give you a better chance of completing the full 40 hrs per week.

I have to agree. That’s a hell shift.

Because it’s hard and that’s a lot of hours. Maybe 32 hours a week is more realistic and that’s still a lot. If you’re getting good performance reviews maybe they’ll accommodate you and let you work 32 hours a week. Like I said, that’s still a lot.

Yeah I could ask for a shorter work days and work week. I think I would thrive on a 4 8s scshdule. My ideal schedule would be 7:00am-3:30pm Monday, Tuesday, Friday Saturday. That’s my dream schedule but I wouldn’t be able to cut down my hours without a doctors note.

Yeah, I like to encourage people to work but maybe 40 hours a week at a stressful job is too much and pushing yourself so hard might be setting yourself up for failure. Working 32 hours is still very respectable and maybe more manageable.

My problem is, I’d love to work 8 hour shifts and work only 4 days. But if I get a doctors accommodation request to cut down to 32 hours a week, that means I can’t work 40 hours even if in that particular week I wanted to work more hours. I really want that 40 hour week on my paycheck. At $21.50 an hour 40 hours makes me very financially stable
