I may have to give up drinking coffee for good

I had a cup of black regular coffee this morning, and my stomach was killing me! Lots of acid indigestion - this is the third time that coffee did this to me, but this time this morning was bad. I had a light sandwich to cut down on the stomach acid and I felt better. ■■■■ this ■■■■ coffee is killing me, and frankly speaking, I dont think it is helping my anxiety any.
I will go through withdrawals, but for now I honestly think that I am better off without coffee - any one else not drink coffee/caffeine?

Does the heartburn go up from your stomach to your chest? If so:

I first had this around 1999 and again in 2014. The first time I was drinking a lot of coffee, the second time, a lot of soda. I had heartburn every day, it was pretty painful and uncomfortable. Both times I was overweight but when I lost weight the symptoms ceased.

Wow, cutting out the coffee. A huge  of support heading your way.

I CAN’T cut the coffee just yet. I’m numb without it.

If you want to cut the coffee… I really want to send support.

In the mean time… sometimes certain roasts and cheep coffee has a higher acid content then some of the lower acid dark roasts.

I live in Seattle… coffee is a very common topic here.

When I get stomach acid, I change coffee brands or go to a different roaster. I just can’t give up the java just yet. I do find some of the fancy flavored light roast make me more sick then alert.

There was a time when I suffered from incredibly painful acid reflux. It felt like a heart attack and it happened often. One day I decided to quit smoking and drinking coffee. The pains went away and never came back. I drink coffee and smoke these days but the acid hasn’t come back.

I gave up coffee about 10 years ago. Went through horrible withdrawl headache. Lasted about two days. I drink two cups of black tea in the morning. Rest of the day I drink water. I can’t drink green tea. Too hard on my stomach. I’m very sensitive to caffeine. I’m very happy to not have all the physical problems coffee was causing. Good luck with this!

Yes I am overweight Nick, and last night there was some on off pain behind my breastbone - chest area (GERD?)
This morning after I had coffee, it was acid indigestion, when I ate some bread it got better.
I usually dont take antacids but I mayhave to pop a pepcid AC pill if it returns.
Tomorrow I see my family doctor, maybe he will prescribe certain antacids for me to take when this happens - my stomach has been feeling like crap for almost 2 weeks now, I think a stomach virus messed my stomach intestinal chemistry

I had to give it up for three reasons:

  1. It aggravates my diverticular disease
  2. It is a stimulant, which doesn’t help out my irregular heartbeat issues
  3. It makes me irritable

I miss it, but not as much as I thought I would.

I am going to go for it, starting tomorrow morning - no coffee, no caffeine - I will go through some withdrawals for a couple of days, but in the end it may help me

Yeah, if it’s happening every day then definitely tell your doctor. For my acid reflux my doctor prescribed a prescription antacid that worked very well. When I lost weight i didn’t need the pills anymore. I think it was Tagamet the first time for me and then Prevacid that I took the second time.

Yea caffeine is a drug like any other.

I moved to celestial seasonings fruity teas. I hate green tea but herbal teas have much flavor I use instead of eating snacks or desert.
Yes I’m trying to get rid of sugar too but they put it in everything. I think that’s why people are moving to natural stuff instead of processed food.

Yeah, bread or crackers will soak up the excess acid.

don’t think i could ever give up coffee. i love it too much. i tried decaff and it didn’t make a blind bit of difference to my symptoms, psychological or physical. so i won’t be giving up the coffee any time soon.

Yeah it helped me out in a flash

I think in usual cases of trying to quit caffeine they taper you off it instead of going cold turkey so you don’t get hit hard with withdrawal symptoms. But quitting caffeine with acid reflux disease might be different.

I’ve been caffeine free for a few yeas. I agree 100 % with @katwomansz that it is a drug like any other.

I could not do caffeine in moderation. I was drinking 20 cups a day.

I may taper off for a couple of days - cold turkey might be too much for me to take

Not a coffee fan here, but still a caffeine junkie. I have cut WAY down on my soda consumption, and my weight is reflecting that. I hope to be down to one soda a day by the end of the year (currently at 2 or 3/day).

The problem is that I kind of need my coffee to function. I was doing some thinking, and I think that having my coffee black with no creamer could be the problem. I am going to try adding some cream and drinking it on a full stomach, and see if this is better - I am too much of a coffee junkie!

are you drinking it on an empty stomach?

Yes I was
