My dogs food for today and the next 2 days is

Ground beef (ok to for dogs to have sometimes), green beans, and carrots.

I usually feed him better but I had $50 to shop for all of us for several days until we get paid so that’s what he’s getting.

He’s an old dog who has been refusing kibble and many people foods so it’s also a matter of what I can get him to eat.

And get this - he doesn’t like fruit!! I’ve tried pumpkin, banana, blueberries and papaya. Nope! He hates them. My next fruit I’m going to introduce is apples. Fingers crossed!

How are you doing @LilyoftheValley ?

I remember when growing up our dogs used to love rice.

My Aussies always ate apples; I hope you have luck on that one.

Nothing wrong with feeding what the dog will eat. It sounds like your dog is just at that age. Who knows? Maybe kibble is difficult or painful. And there’s nothing wrong with ground beef; it sounds like you are treating him very well, which he no doubt deserves. Ghost doesn’t eat enough and sometimes not at all, so we’ve had to supplement his kibble with wet food mixed in to appeal to him. And he gets an upset tummy every so often, so he gets chicken and rice when that happens. We keep powdered pumpkin around, too. I like that you take care of him like this; I think how people treat animals says a lot about them.

My dad used to feed his dogs shredded cheese and cut up hot dogs on their dry food.

You can mix it with rice to make it go further.

We gave our doggies ribs bones last night. They loved those.

Otherwise they will eat people food and a combo of dry and wet food.

My dog isnt big on fruit either. When she was puppy she used to back up in apparent fear of bananas .

My little 13 year old Shih Tsu won’t even eat canned dog food!!! I’ve tried multiple brands. That used to be his once a month treat plus on holidays and his bdays.

The problem with the beef is that it’s too fatty. Dogs are supposed to eat 90/10 or leaner if they have it. I could only afford the fatty beef on sale. But since I won’t normally buy it, it should be fine. I boiled it and skimmed off as much fat as possible and then rinsed the beef with water to get rid of as much as possible. He ate it no problem though. Yay!

He has stage 4 gum disease unfortunately. I brush his teeth but can’t afford the dental cleaning. All the places I called told me to expect it to run up to $2000. I used to give him a dental chew everyday but he’s now refusing them.

Thanks for the compliment. It means a lot to me

And I’m so glad you’re supplementing with the wet food. It’s good for them.

Thanks @anon4362788 . I decided to freeze half the meat and like you said, add a little rice to make it last longer

Remember alien99? I’m friends with him and he makes food for his boy. Chicken, rice, and veggies.

Ask the butcher section of your grocery store for fat and trimmings. You can get it cheap or free. You can check several store and butcher shops. Freeze in quart bags until ready to cook.

Great idea @ZombieMombie ! I need to feed him 5% of his meals as liver according to the reading I’ve been doing. I’m hoping to get it really cheap and cook it up and then freeze weekly portions of it. I plan to do the same with the other meats.

I also learned he needs fish 1-2 times per week, and poultry and other meats the rest of the week to be 4 types of protein. He can have egg once per week. 25+% of his diet should be meat, 25+% of a variety of vegetables (more non starchy than starchy), then a little fruit and safe grains like rice, or oats etc.

It’s a learning curve for sure!

The biggest thing I remember about making my own food was to watch stool color and consistency. Sounds like you have a lot of good info!

Avoid fish. Dogs can’t eliminate mercury well at all. Every fish has some level of mercury. Some have higher, salmon is o e, but if you feed any fish keep it to twice a month to keep mercury levels low enough to not cause any problems over time.

Oh. Ok. They mentioned a few safe fish like sardines, cod, and occasionally salmon plus others. I’ll read from other sources to be safe. Thanks for the heads up!

He will when he realizes nothing else is being provided.
