I hate drinking alcohol

I wish I could stop. I’m seriously thinking about attending AA meetings, they have one in my town but only online at the moment. I don’t have the confidence for online meeting as I would think its like Zoom?

I’m interested what AA meetings are like?

I feel better without alcohol after 5 days. I get bored mostly and depressed and am compelled to drink. I hate it but can’t stop myself.

Thank you for your openness. I find it really difficult not drinking. I self medicate too.

I drank from last Sunday till yesterday every day. Like 15 cans. I stopped last night. Feel better.

@bobbilly

There’s an AA book called “The big book”

https://aa-edinburgh.org.uk/big-book-online/

Click chapter 5 “how it works”. That will download a pdf . Give it a read.

Feel free to read the other chapters too!

You sound like you have a desire to stop drinking.

If you have trouble reading/ concentration problems then you can listen to the audio book version here

https://www.aa.org/pages/en_us/alcoholics-anonymous-audio-version

Again, click on chapter 5.

I hate alcohol too. It just gives me migraines. My sister says its because I gulp it down too fast. She says you’re supposed to sip.

I like how it makes me feel drinking red wine, but I know it is not good for me so I don’t do it.

It’s been my experience that AA meetings can vary from group to group. I suppose they all have a certain feel, but they also can vary widely in quality. They say there are no bad AA meetings, but I have been in a bad meeting, where I was thinking, “Is this an AA meeting, or is this the twilight zone?” If a town has one AA group it probably has another. If one group doesn’t suit you, look for another. Personalities can clash. Don’t take it personally. Don’t think it is anybody’s fault. That is just life. Some AA meetings might be made up of a group of older men having a quiet discussion in a back room at a church. Another one might be full of young people. In the big cities there are very large AA groups of more than a hundred participants. Some AA meetings have a number of pretty young women, which is probably a distraction from the pursuit of sobriety. They also have NA meetings for people addicted to drugs. Both AA and NA are twelve step groups, and one can do for another in a pinch. Remember, if one AA meeting is rubbing you the wrong way, there most likely other AA meetings in your town.
