I got the rare chance

to have a long conversation with a Spanish speaking only gentleman today at the nursing home where I volunteer.

I have been studying Spanish almost continuously, either formally or informally, for the last 49 years ever since I was ten years old. Unfortunately, I have rarely, if ever, had the chance to actually speak Spanish or actually hold conversations in Spanish with anyone. And every time I ever did get the chance, I always fell on my face it seemed.

Well, today, I was conversing with this man, in Spanish, and I was actually holding my own. Of course, I was sweating bullets from a lot of anxiety, but, I was getting along okay. I’m really proud of myself.

I am taking a Spanish course from an app called Babbel.com and it’s really helping me. More than any other Spanish course I’ve ever taken, I think.

i’ve always found speaking another language to be hard. I can type in most languages because of my linguistics background. But speaking it is another level.

That’s good that you found someone that’ll talk with you though. ^^

Did you ever do Rosetta Stone? If so, what did you think of it?

@LilyoftheValley, Let’s say I bought Rosetta Stone, but, I never took the course because I couldn’t figure out how to use it on my computer so, it was a complete waste of money.

I think Spanish was my worst subject. I never did good at it and the only reason I got passing grades in the two years I took it in high school was because my two older sisters had taken it before me with the same teacher and my teacher had really liked them so she gave me a B both years. Spanish was so hard and impossible for me that it stressed me out in 1976, before that term was even used. In a couple of my classes I got so far behind and lost that, it was before I got sick, but the subject matter was so far over my head I felt mentally ill. I wasn’t mentally ill at the time but that’s how I felt.

@77nick77, I felt the way you did about German.

It’s definitely not. Their course is not adaptable to all computers. I had Windows 8 at the time, back in about 2008, and it wasn’t adaptable to that.

Wow. So Babbel.com is really good then. What does it cost?

Honestly, I forgot. I’m sorry. Not near as much as Rosetta Stone though.
