I gambled against my weight loss

I’m finally in a mental space where I’m trying to lose weight again(but in a healthy way working with a dietitian). My high weight was 296 in March 2023. I had lost down to 194 in August this year but did it by doing extreme diets. And then my eating disorder took over and I was binge/purging all the time. It got pretty bleak. But I started seeing a dietician and a ED therapist. I gained back up to 231 pounds, I really wanted to start losing again so I decided to join a DeitBet.

For the DietBet you pay $35 into a pool of money. You take pictures of your weight when you start. You have to lose 4% of your body weight in 4 weeks. Then at the end you weigh yourself again and submit. Everyone in the game who makes their goal splits the pot of money. If you didn’t make your goal you lose your $35.

It’s been very motivating to me to keep with a healthy balanced diet. 4 weeks ago I was 231, today was weigh in day and I was at 220.4 so I made my goal. Waiting to see how much money I’ll be getting this go around.

This DietBet approach doesn’t seem like a healthy motivational tool. Does your dietician and ED therapist know about this?

My ED therapist knows. She said as long as my eating habits are staying consistent and it doesn’t trigger me to relapse into my ED that it was okay. But she did say she would prefer me not to do them continuously

Which I was tempted to sign up for another one right away but she said not to

Yeah, you learned that not every diet is safe. Not very fad diet that comes along is OK and safe. Some fad diet may have contributed to your ED.

Yes I had tried ketogenic diet then went to a strict carnivore diet. It completely destroyed my relationship around food

Yeah, I read an article about the carnivore diet saying how dangerous it is.

I lost weight crazy fast on the carnivore diet. It was really unhealthy. I couldn’t think right because the brain fog was so bad

Well, before you start any diet you should ask your doctor if it is safe for you and also do some reading up on it yourself. Now with the internet all the information about most things is right at your fingertips.

I lost 18 lbs in 3 months. That is 6 lbs a month. I have done Crash diets before losing 10 lbs a month but It felt unhealthy as well and you gain It all back as well.

Given that you have an ED, I think It is best to take things slow as things can go to extremes quickly.

I also know that people Who want to lose weight quickly often don’t listen to anyone about moderation. Just listen to your body and if you’re hungry eat.

Yea is agree… especially for someone who struggles with ed. Losing weight is great for you’re health but I don’t feel like it should be connected with the feeling of being a winner. Like somehow if I don’t lose weight I’ve lost the game or something you know what I mean? The only thing that matters is health. Not to be negative but people will always clap for you if you lose weight, but I dont think that should matter. It’s part of weight shaming culture. Weather I lose weight or not I know I’m a winner

I have lost a lot a weight in the past because I needed to get in shape for football season. But it always would go back up. It’s a life long journey so now I focus on implementing steady healthy habits
