Anyone see a dietician?

I’m seeing a dietician starting on Tuesday. Just wondering if any of you have experiences working with a dietician? Mine is going to be eating disorder focused but also weight loss focused. I don’t know what to expect and I’m really nervous. This is an important first step for me in recovery, I don’t know why it’s so scary. Getting help is scary

I just started working with one for my IBS.

She wanted to know what a typical day is like for me.

She advised me on foods that are beneficial and foods to avoid,

She’s a nutritionist; I don’t know if there’s a difference. Basically, her recommendation is for every meal to eat half plate of non starchy vegetables, 1/4 a plate of protein and a 1/4 plate of grains, starches, fruits and dairy and have three servings of 15 grams of carbohydrates.

Yes, I see a Bariatric doctor who specializes in nutrition and non surgical weight loss approaches.
I think it’s a great idea @Hanna_Foxx
Best of luck with it!

I had an appointment with a nutritionist last week. She pretty much told me the same thing @77nick77 She also gave some examples of healthy balanced snacks.

I’ve seen one asking about the ketogenic diet they said it was a terrible idea and in my case bad for the heart

I’ve heard stories that people are getting significantly better on it like epilepsy schizophrenia depression and some forms of heart disease I think truthfully it’s a bit exaggerated tho not a “cure” if it was we would of known wayyyyy before that diet came out it there wouldn’t of ever been medicine if the claims were true

I too fell into that “keto cures schizophrenia” trap. I followed this one influencer on Instagram who apparently successfully stopped all her meds. So I went on the Keto diet and took myself off my meds and BAM ended up in the hospital getting put back on medication.

Yeah and sadly there’s a lot of other things it “cures” if it did everyone would do it and medicine never even would of existed

I wish I could cure my heart disease with a diet

:sob:

My ICD for my cardiomyopathy is a big hinder on getting a job I’ll never become a mechanic it ducks but it’s true

The diet industry is a huge business and, as such, is ripe for making exaggerated, unproven, or even false claims to sell the diet to consumers.

Lot of consumers have fallen for this at some point in their lives – that’s why fad diets become popular and then fade away to be replaced by the next new fad diet and so on.

It is a big red flag if someone claims that diet alone can “cure” a medical condition.

My parents are on a “carnivore” diet. They have tried so hard to convince me to go on it. It just cannot be healthy… They only eat meat, butter, eggs and cheese and that’s it. Like what about fiber? They say they don’t need fiber. They say it could cure my illness, but I’m skeptical. Carnivore is a fad diet right now

It seems like that diet would lead to cardiovascular disease. Also, what are they putting the butter on? I have an image in my mind of someone sitting there eating a stick of butter for lunch.

Starlet saw an wating disorder specialist for about a year when we first got him. She was phenomenal. She explained some of the mechanisms behind his eating disorder, and why our approaches were the opposite of helpful. Then she helped us all come up with a plan for getting him to have a healthy relationship with food, and we met every week where he did weigh-ins, reported how his meal goals went, and we adjusted them as needed. Then, when he started gaining weight reliably, we moved to once a month. Then once every three months, before getting discharged.

@Moonbeam They literally put pats of butter on their steak, or make “browned butter bites” which is just browned butter chilled in ice cube trays. It’s highly disturbing how much butter they eat

That’s so gross.

That is very strange. It sounds like something from a comedy skit about fad diets.

I am so sorry you had to go through that. I am currently using a ketogenic diet to treat my sz but my experience has also not been a “cure” As long as I can stay perfect on the diet, like keeping my ketones elevated then it really works. It completely turns off the voices and my delusions fade away, but within hours of slipping up on the diet my symptoms come right back again.
