It depends, some mental health professionals are out there just for the money - but I believe that they are not in the majority.
I had one pdoc who wanted to see me every week - he supposedly did some therapy as well as medication management - he was the one who prescribed me a powerful antidepressant and kept me on it for years- it triggered psychosis. Now this guy was not in it to help others, it seems like he was there only for the money.
My last psychiatrist was not for the money and my current pdoc is not either - she wants to help it seems.
I mean all doctors are really in it for the money in some ways - its a business, but many want to help and genuinely like what they are doing. I would not think that pdocs or therapists are practicing just for the money.
I mean its a calling to them - medical school is a big commitment and so is getting licensed to do therapy work.
The majority of them want to help and are not in it just for the dough
there are genuine people out there that want to help people and its why they chose that path, your never going to know the real reason why they are in that job so if i was you id just tell let them help you and pretend there not there for money goodluck hope you get well soon
A month ago I read online pdoc’s, social workers, counsellers immediately get rid of people that suffer from Borderline Personality Disorder or any other personality disorder. That made me think they are a bunch of evil, judgemental people.
Because of my sz it seemed like a lot of the help I got had conditions placed on it. I’ve been on med’s a long time, but I still start to see them as punishment and not therapy. I know if I get off the med’s I will mess up.
Not all doctors or therapists like to treat or know how to treat those suffering with borderline.
There are doctors and especially therapists who specialize in treating borderline.
Although meds are important, DBT is the primary form of therapy that is proven to help those suffering with borderline, and not every therapist is familiar with DBT - this is a specialty
yeah im not that trusting either its hard I mean when do you ever normally open up to a stranger it is an odd feeling. tell them how you feel
theyre professional and they wont mind
that’s what I would do.
Well, looking at psychiatrists they like money like anyone else. And a job is a job. They can still help you even if they are looking at it like just a 9-5. I think ALL of them start out with good intentions. I don’t think they would go through all that training and years of college if they didn’t have some talent or knack for helping people. I don’t think they would put themselves through all that if they didn’t care. There’s easier ways to make money. But I also think that some of the workers are in the wrong field. When I feel this way, it’s usually about the mental workers at the lower levels. The counselors in group homes for instance or workers in small clinics or in day programs. I have been in a few situations where I see the way certain counselors act or relate to clients and I am just incredulous that they actually think they are helping people or that they even think they belong in this line of work at all. But I think the people at the top have to earn their money. They may get jaded or burned out over time though and not be as good as they can be. But it’s complicated. I don’t want to put us down but it’s awful hard to help people like us. We are screwed up with one of the most serious mental illnesses there are and there’s no cure. How much can they possibly do for us? Dealing with schizophrenia is like trying to turn back the tide. It must be discouraging to them that they can’t cure us and maybe they just think, “Oh, here’s another one” They MUST get discouraged that they can’t help us. They’re not stupid, they know about our complaints and criticisms about them. I’m not advocating giving up on us of course. But they can’t care too much. There has to be a buffer between us and them and it is authority.
it is hard to find a good mechanic, accountant…lawyer etc…
it is no different with a therapist…
try word of mouth…ask other people who have visited therapists.
know some one cares.
take care
In the UK, they don’t earn more money for any alteration to your treatment, nor for any increase in the number of patients, so your real beef is with your terrible health system, not with doctors themselves. My son has had superb treatment since he was diagnosed. The other day, he missed an apptmt and the shrink and nurse practitioner turned up on the doorstep! When he moved areas recently, I wrote to his previous team to thank them. Yes, they get paid, but that doesn’t mean money is their main motivation.
A couple of days ago, I went in for my appointment at the county mental health center and began to talk to the nurse practitioner who I am assigned to. Long story short, she was interested in personal, non-mental health issues (physical ailments) and obtaining it from my GP. We went back and forth for a few minutes, and resolved with me walking out and telling her she could go to hell. Later that day, my case manager got me in to see a real doctor. I saw the doctor, got my issues handled without much fuss at all, and I am now going to try to make that pdoc my permanent provider there. I just want to keep some things private that have no impact WHATSOEVER on my mental health.
How true…Some mechanics are well known for shady business, always trying to sell you something you don’t need…especially air filters…which can just be blown clean with a compressor… They even occasionally make up a problem with your car so you will have to spend a few hundred on some part that really doesn’t need replaced. there was a business article several years ago about this very thing.
Same does apply to therapists…and some therapists are known to twist what you tell them and exaggerate it to make you look delusional…I in the past talked about satellite monitoring and the therapists report changed it to say that I communicated with satellites…
